End of the season and the Good Ol' Days

We're seeing the regular season wind down again and each year, there's always this "fall tinge" that hits about late August. I don't know how to describe the feeling that comes over. Maybe it's because the "unofficial" end of summer, Labor Day is just around the corner. Perhaps all the talk of football ramping up to its opening day crescendo creates an air of excitement that is multiplied by the usual race day activity.

There is a difference in the air - while it may be the same temperature as late spring day, the smells of soon-to-be harvested crops sweeten the breeze, there is a feeling at the end of the year similar to the ending of a work day - except this time it's the end of the racing year. It's a time that always punctuates my memories of each season.

A thread on Dirtdrivers.com had several people reminiscing about times gone by and the sound of Ford Flatheads, Offys and Novi engines in cars of the 50's and 60's.

But the "good ol' days" are relative. I'm not a youngin' compared to some of the new crop of drivers and fans, while I may be a kid to the likes of the folks who remember races at Capitol Beach, Sunset Speedway, Midwest, and so on. We all have our memories. I remember with some fondness the days of 16-foot wings on sprint cars and the World of Outlaws were truly "Run whatcha brung" - others remember no wings at all. The younger people know nothing of little wings.

Maybe in 20 years the racing technology will change so that the sound of a Chevy V-8 will sound sweet to those who remember it and be foreign to the spectators watching dual-overhead cam, or electric, or some synthetic-fuel-burning 15,000 RPM motors winding in their place. Who knows?

For all of us, it's different. But it's important that we remember these things and look fondly upon them. But we can't browbeat others into thinking that the natural evolution is inherently bad. People complaining about purses, track conditions, rough driving, accusations of cheating, and so on have been part of racing since day one. The last-lap wins, jubilant drivers and the thrill of a good show have been permanent fixtures as well. It's all part of the entire experience.

No time today is worse than the other, nor is it necessarily better. It just is, and it should always be a time to cherish. None of us would be there if we didn't like it. Racing is entertainment at its core, and even those who work in the field are still part of the entertainment industry. We are part of it because we want to be, it isn't like farming, or building, or those things people have to do. So we need to remember WHY we are there and use that to fuel our memories of days gone by as the laps run behind us.

It's in our nature to long for what we thought was the best of times but so long as we're enjoying the racing, every time we go to the track, and no matter if what we see is good or bad, we're always living in the "good ol' days."

Sprint Driver Rodney Droud to Retire this Weekend

From RodneyDroud.com

The Final Race

(08/29) Folks, the time has finally come. After a great deal of prayer and soul-searching, it is time to call it a racing career- I intend to retire after this weekend’s Nebraska Cup at Eagle Raceway.

Ever since I won that first track championship with the Opp Racing Team, I had toyed with the idea of “hanging it up.” Why not go out a “winner” while the going was good? But the following year, Dad put together a potent team that just wouldn’t allow it. I ended up winning a second consecutive title and the thrill to drive kept gnawing at me. So I decided to race on and off in 2006 and figured that I was still good enough to do it again this year. But I want to be honest: it’s been a struggle. While Dad has put me (and Jr.) in a great car this year, I haven’t been nearly as “effective” as I hoped I could be. We had makeshift crews almost every night (except for my long-time crewman, Scott Deines) and that took its toll on me. While Jr. could handle it, I was incapable of separating the duties of a pitman and a driver and I think it showed in my performances. We were blessed to have some wonderful sponsors in ’07, but it wasn’t nearly enough, especially after the early season crash that destroyed one of Dad’s cars. While it wasn’t my fault, I wasn’t able to shake the fact that Dad was having to foot 99% of the bills and that really bothered me. The crash two weeks ago, which was a true “racin’ deal,” took the last bit of wind out of my sails.

I was honored when former owner, Jeff Bogue (57), paid me the ultimate compliment by asking me to drive his car again. My 2004 championship winning owner, Ed “Zippy” Opp, also threw me a huge helping of confidence when he told me afterwards that he thought I should keep racing because “you still have what it takes.” And even though he’s my dad, I find it hard to believe that he wouldn’t be straight with me and tell me like it is; he’s said time and time again that he does believe in me and knows I can do the job. I’m humbled by the fact that many have encouraged me and have faith in me, even to this day. I still think I can do it. In fact, I’m convinced that I have “the goods” to take the car to Victory Lane. But it’ll happen only one more time- this Sunday.

As I said earlier, I had really been praying about this and it’s my belief that God revealed what He wants me to do. I don’t have any idea what this means or what I’m supposed to do next, but as I put on my 2005 picture card, the Bible tells us in Jeremiah 29:11-12, “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord, “plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.”

Thank you so much for all the love and support you’ve given to Lori and I over the years! You have been great friends through it all…

Greenwood, NE (August 13, 2007)-Two I-80 Speedway Dodge Super Late Model
drivers are ranked in the top 10 national standing of the NASCAR Whelen All
American Series (NWAAS); NASCAR's weekly racing series. Al Humphrey is tied
for fourth, and Joe Kosiski is only two points behind the fourth place
drivers. NASCAR ranks the top 500 drivers in the NWAAS, and there are
approximately 1800 drivers across the nation.

Not only are two of I-80 Speedway's drivers in the top 10, there also are 4
in the top 25, 8 in the top 100, with a total of 24 ranked nationally in the
top 500.

The drivers and their ranking are:
4-tie) Al Humphrey,
6) Joe Kosiski
16) Jason Hobscheidt
24) Leon Zeitner
61) Kenny Edwards
65) Jay Stewart
68) Clint Benson
89) Al Zeitner
110) Scott Koskovich
124) Bill Leighton, Jr.
176) Justin Zeitner

The point structure utilized by NASCAR for this ranking features an
"inverted" point's format, with car counts affecting the amount of points a
competitor receives. Points will be awarded in ascending order with the last
place car receiving two points, next-to-last receiving four and will then
move up through the field in two point increments. (For example, the feature
winner in a 10-car field will receive 20 NASCAR points, while the feature
winner in a 25-car field would receive 50.) Competitors will count their 18
highest point finishes with a season-ending date of September 30, 2007. At
the end of the season, each top 500 driver will receive a certificate of
recognition from NASCAR displaying their 2007 ranking.

Helping to keep racing on track

By Jane White/Daily Sun sports editor
Thursday, August 30, 2007 9:25 AM CDT

When the Beatrice Speedway decided to say thank-you to racing supporter Garold Kleveland recently, it did so in a big way - a 40-foot way that is.

Saturday night as the Beatrice Speedway celebrated its 50th anniversary, Kleveland was honored during intermission for his years of service to the local racing community.

“Garold Kleveland has been a big part of Beatrice Speedway since Aug. 25, 1957,” Beatrice Speedway promoter Tim Fralin said. “He's supplied a wrecker and crew to every race we've had at the Speedway since that date.

“I don't know what we'd do without him.”

The Speedway's way of “saying thank you” to Kleveland was to honor him during the anniversary celebration and to name the catwalk in the back pit area after him.

Along with all of the other things he'd done for the race track over the years, Kleveland helped with the construction of the original section of the catwalk, which has since been added to.

“We made a 40-foot long sign and we're naming the catwalk after Garold,” Fralin said. “That's just a small step toward the appreciation he really deserves.”

Fralin said it was time to recognize Kleveland and track officials believed there was no better time than on the 50th anniversary of the Speedway.

Kleveland said he was “surprised” by the honor.

“I was really surprised,” Kleveland said, adding his family knew about the recognition, but didn't let him in on it. “Everybody kept everything pretty secretive.”

While Kleveland said the catwalk has been a nice addition to the pits and a bonus for those wanting to watch the races from the track's backstretch, he admits he's never seen a race from there.

“I've never watched a race from the grandstand, either,” Kleveland said, adding he “pits” with his wrecker along with the race car drivers on the track's infield.

From their spots inside the track, Fralin said Kleveland and his volunteer crew are always ready and waiting to help.

“On any given night, Garold has three to six trucks out here,” Fralin said. “If we had to pay for that by the hour, the cost would be astronomical, especially over 50 years.

“To have him supply that for us at no cost every week is incredible.”

Fralin said Kleveland is “always there” when the racers need him, whether it's to tow their car off the race track or help load the car when they are ready to go home.

“If you need something after the races or you need a ride home, they'll tow your car,” Fralin said. “They've done it for numerous drivers out here over the years.”

Aside from the equipment and manpower he and his crew provide, Fralin said Kleveland also brings a lot of knowledge to the racetrack each week.

“When you've been at it as long as Garold, there's probably nothing anybody could teach him,” Fralin said.

Fralin said Kleveland always finds a way to get the job done with the least amount of damage to the race cars involved.

“We've seen him do the two wrecker bit where one is going backwards because there's no wheels on the car or it's incapable of moving,” Fralin said. “When you're hanging a car in mid air and hauling it with two wreckers, it takes special effort.

“They take good care of the equipment when they take it off the track. They don't just hook on and pull it off. They treat it like their own.”

As a former racer at the Beatrice Speedway, Fralin said “more than once” he's been taken off the track on the hook of one of Kleveland's wreckers.

“It means a lot when they show respect for your equipment,” Fralin said.

Along with taking care of their primary duties of pushing and towing race cars, Fralin said Kleveland and crew are always willing to help safety crews when needed in critical situations.

“They're always right on the spot,” Fralin said. “If somebody is hurt, they'll lend a hand if needed.”

Fralin said Kleveland's crews have helped cut drivers out of cars after wrecks.

Although races had previously been held at another location in Beatrice, the first races at the current Beatrice Speedway, located on the Gage County Fairgrounds, were held Aug. 25, 1957.

Kleveland and his wrecker crews have been a mainstay at the track since that time. He was previously honored by the racing community when the Beatrice Speedway Hall of Fame recognized its first class in 2002 and he was one of five individuals inducted.

When the track first opened, Kleveland said “everyone” was anxious to help. He said each race night there were multiple push tracks and pack trucks helping with the racing program.

Kleveland said he and his family were “new in town” when he first started volunteering at the former race track at the old fairgrounds in 1955.

In the early days, Kleveland said everybody who had a wrecker or push truck was at the track on race night.

“I don't know if we were ever really asked to get involved or if we just wanted to be part of it,” Kleveland said.

When he first started working the races, Kleveland said he had an old panel track, which he used as a push truck. The earlier-day race cars, including models like the 1932 Plymouth, had to be “pushed” to start Kleveland said, and it took a number of push trucks just to get races started.

Kleveland bought his first wrecker in 1959 and immediately started taking it to the race track.

There have been many positive changes in racing since he first started working at the track, Kleveland said. He said all of the safety equipment at the Speedway has improved greatly over the past 50 years.

Kleveland said radios, which help the safety crews stay in contact with each other, were one improvement.

Over the years, Kleveland said his “duties” at the race track had changed.

“Now, the four-wheelers do the majority of the pushing,” Kleveland said. “They're quicker and they're more maneuverable.”

Another positive addition was when fire trucks were first used at the track.

“We used to carry a fire extinguisher in our old power wagon,” Kleveland said. “But that was slow and we were dumb. We didn't have near the safety features we have now.”

Kleveland said track fire crews are now specially trained in how to handle situations on the race track.

“Having the fire truck and the ambulance there has taken a lot of responsibility off us,” Kleveland said.

Driver's safety, however, is always Kleveland's first concern, though.

The incidents he remembers most over the years at the Speedway have involved driver injuries, including having to extricate drivers from their cars.

Watching and helping other rescue personnel work to free drivers from wrecks has prompted Kleveland to add to the equipment he brings to the race track.

Pipe cutters, which can be used to take the tops off race cars and free drivers, were one addition he's made over the years.

“It all evolves from just the experience of things happening,” Kleveland said.

Kleveland said track officials have been proactive in “getting things done” when safety issues need to be addressed.

Kleveland said a lot of people, include Gage County Ag Society members, volunteer their time at the Speedway week after week all summer long and work to make racing a good experience for all involved.

“You have to have a respect for what they're doing,” Kleveland said.

Racing has done a lot for the Beatrice community, Kleveland said, and to be a “rung” in its ladder is nice.

“The races bring a lot of commerce to our town,” Kleveland said. “I don't know that all of the town people realize that to the degree it is.”

While his most recent honor was special, Kleveland said his biggest reward over the last 50-plus years has been in the friendships he's made with drivers, their crews and others at the local Speedway.

“Everybody tries to help each other,” Kleveland said. “The biggest share of the drivers and their crews are real appreciative and that makes it fun.”

Eagle 8-25: Danley, Alcorn, Kros and Busboom Win Season Finale

By Greg Soukup

A very large crowd was in the stands for the Season Finale and Championship
Points Night at Eagle Raceway, sponsored by Auto Trans Matic. An
unseasonably mild August afternoon gave way to a cool August night as the
season's points championships were decided at "America's Home Track".

The first B Feature was for the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sports Compacts.
At the end of the first lap Jack Prall III was in the lead in his #44,
followed by the 99 of Jason Tadlock, the 22 of rookie Elliot Halvorson,
Barry Kinnersley in the #00 and the #24 of Mike Rice. On the 3rd lap
Halvorson got loose, allowing both Kinnersley and Rice to get by. The top 5
remained unchanged to the finish with Prall III winning, Tadlock 2nd,
Kinnersley 3rd, Rice in 4th and Halvorson taking the final transfer spot.

The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds then came out for their B. Dan
Wayman's 5ST was in 1st with the 95 of Dylan Smith in 2nd, Doug Deterding in
the #13 3rd, the 57 of Brian Cudly in 4th and the 8C of Chad Anderson in
5th. Before the first lap was over Anderson moved around Cudly for the 4th
position. Cudly slowed dramatically and George Haney moved up into the final
transfer spot. At the checkered flag it was Wayman, Smith, Anderson,
Deterding and Haney.

The last B Main saw the Budweiser Championship 360 Sprint cars on the track.
The early going showed Frank Galusha's #24B at the point, followed by Ryan
Kitchen's #21, Josh Riggins in the 14, the 20D of Dan Nickolite and Terry
Holliman in the #23. On lap #6 Chris Roseland got around Holliman for 5th.
The finish showed Galusha winning, Kitchen 2nd, Riggins 3rd, Dan Nickolite
4th and Roseland coming back from a rollover in his heat race to transfer to
the A Feature.

Then it was time for the Feature events of the evening to begin. The Stereo
West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compacts lead the way. The first lap was marred by
a red flag which came out when Neil Pella rolled over between turns 1 & 2.
Pella was unhurt, and even told the fans "That was FUN!!!" before retiring
to the pits to the cheers of the crowd. On the complete restart Jason Miller
grabbed the lead in his #77 with Harry White's #3 in 2nd; following them
were the #51 of Amanda Rhiley and the 0 of Rich White. Amanda Rhiley got
around Harry White for the 2nd spot before a lap was completed. 3 laps later
Justin Busboom grabbed 4th position from Rich White and then moved around
Harry White the following lap. Dan Rhiley moved up to 4th after 3 more laps.
On lap 12 Amanda Rhiley spun and went into the infield. The cars held their
positions with Miller crossing the finish line first followed by Busboom,
Elliot Halvorson's #22 and the #26 of Derek Dreamer. When the top 4
finishers went to the infield, Maynard Kinnersley placed a claim on the #77
of Jason Miller. Miller refused the claim however and, per IMCA rules, was
disqualified and forfeited all of his points and winnings for the evening.
Miller also received a suspension for 4 IMCA points racing nights. This
resulted in Justin Busboom being declared the victor.

This is only Justin Busboom's 3rd year in racing, having competed at
Beatrice Speedway in Hobby Stocks his first year. The next 2 years were
right here at Eagle Raceway, running in the Sport Compact division. "I just
want to thank all of the fans for coming out every week," Busboom said. "I
hope they enjoy the good close racing that the Sport Compacts bring to the
track every night, and I hope they all come back next year" he stated.

Despite having finished in the 6th position, young Kyle Schamp managed to
take home the season championship in the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport
Compacts. "Next year I hope to be out here in the 2K IMCA Modified" Kyle
said.

The Valentino's Pizza IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature was next. Don Kros moved
into the lead in his #53, with the 22 of Nick Beckman in 2nd and the #9 of
Rex Schreiner in 3rd. Schreiner got around Beckman on the 2nd circuit. On
lap #6 both Beckman and the #21H of Shane Hiatt got under Schreiner. Rick
Bradley suffered a flat right rear tire on his #28B before the lap was
completed however, forcing a restart. On lap #12 Hiatt spun. That made the
running order Kros, Beckman, Schreiner and the #86 of Justin Wulf. On the
very next lap Wulf got loose, allowing the 38C of Casey Moyer to grab the
4th spot. Wulf took only 1 lap to get back around Moyer and pass Schreiner
also to move into 3rd. At the finish stripe it was Kros, Beckman, Wulf and
Moyer. Another disqualification was made when Beckman was found to have
modifications at the rear of his racer. That put Wulf in 2nd and Moyer in
3rd.

This was Kros' 2nd victory in a row at Eagle. "I need to thank my crew;
Jeff, Gene and Millie Kros for helping me all year and giving me a winning
car. I hope that all the fans come back next year, because I can't wait to
get back here and do some more racing," Kros stated.

The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds then rolled onto the 1/3-mile
high-banks of Eagle. Dusty Anderson led in the 8A with Tom Spanel's #3T,
Lucas Robinson's 95R, Justin Jurgens' 22J and the 11AA of Ed Raines close on
his rear bumper. Spanel moved into the lead on lap #5. Jesse Robinson spun
his #75J the same lap, but the leaders had passed the flag stand. Defending
track champion Chris Alcorn got around both Bob Rusinger's #7 and Raines'
11AA the next lap to grab 5th. The following circuit he also passed Robinson
to take over the 4th spot. On lap #10 Spanel and Anderson got together and
spun in turn #4. This put Jurgens at the point, followed by Alcorn, Robinson
and Raines. It took Raines only 2 more laps to get around Robinson for the
3rd spot. With just 4 laps remaining Alcorn got around Jurgens for the lead.
Meanwhile, Doug Deterding had been on the move from his tail-end starting
spot. With 3 laps left he had moved up to the 4th spot. When the checkered
flag flew it was Alcorn, Jurgens, Raines and Deterding.

"First of all, I want to thank all of the fans for having come out to see us
all year. They've been here through the cold, the heat and all the bugs
cheering us on every week. The racers really appreciate them having stuck
with us this year" Alcorn said. "Next, I need to thank my sponsors for
giving me the equipment to race week in and week out" he stated. Chris'
sponsors include Midwest Unlimited, Alcorn/Thompson/Hill Motorsports, The
Alley Bar, Spanel Racing, L & L Motorsports, Jet Racing, Doctor Johns and
Heavy Company. "I kind of wish the track had stayed the way it was in the
heat race, nice & slick; because we missed the set-up for the Feature
completely. Luckily the moisture came up and I finally got the car to go,"
he added. "I just hope that the car count was high enough to allow this win
to count towards the national championship. It was great to win back-to-back
points championships here at Eagle, but the National win would top it all
off" he finished.

The last A Main of the evening was for the Budweiser Championship 360
Sprints. Rookie Trevor Grossenbacher pulled out to a small lead at the drop
of the green flag in his #35. Behind him the running order was the 7G of
Mike Gabelhouse, the 17 of Gage Dorr and Gene Acklund in the 14G. Dorr got
under Gablehouse to snag the 3rd position on lap 3. Next lap Tige Jensen's
71 and Acklund's 14G got together, causing Jensen to spin with a flat right
rear tire which sent him to the pits. Acklund was relegated to the rear of
the field for his involvement also. The running order prior to the restart
was Grossenbacher, Dorr, Gabelhouse and the 28 of Ken Klabunde. After the
green flew, Adam Gullion went under both Gabelhouse and Klabunde to move
into 3rd. Shortly after that Ryan Kitchen spun his #21 in turns 1 & 2,
bringing out yet another yellow. With 16 laps remaining, Gullion and Jason
Danley's #82 both got around Dorr to take over 2nd and 3rd. 5 laps later
Danley passed Gullion for 2nd and set his sights on Grossenbacher. Danley
had been moving rapidly through the field passing everyone on the bottom of
the track. With just 10 circuits left in the race Danley moved under
Grossenbacher to snag the lead briefly, until Tige Jensen and John Klabunde
spun in turns 1 & 2 causing a restart. When the green flag flew,
Grossenbacher moved down to the bottom of the track to fend off Danley. With
5 laps left Jay Russell moved up to 3rd in the #76 and then got around
Grossenbacher the next lap after Danley also passed him on the high side. At
the finish it was Danley, Russell, Grossenbacher, Brad Krutz in the #91 and
Adam Gullion.

"I want to thank my crew, Marvin Brees, Dave Skillman and Jake for all the
hard work they do for me every race. I also need to thank my owner; on that
last yellow flag he signaled for me to get up on the wheel and get going.
That was what got me into the lead. I got lucky and found the bottom first,
letting me get by all of those cars in the early going. I tell you this;
Trevor drove one heck of a race. He saw me get by him on the bottom, and
when that yellow came out he moved down to protect it. I knew I had to get
the jump on him on that last restart, and luckily I did" Danley said. "I
want to thank all of my sponsors too, because without them we wouldn't be
able to race". Danley's sponsors include Cosaert Thorobreds, Cubby's
Greenwood Truck Plaza, Jerry Crowley Investment, Mark Burch Motorsports,
Egan Equipment Company and Skillman Auto.

Be sure to come out next SUNDAY afternoon, September 2nd for the "Nebraska
Cup" at Eagle Raceway. Featured will be the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport
Compacts (sanctioned), Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stocks (unsanctioned & no
claim but IMCA rules apply), Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds
(sanctioned) and the Budweiser Championship 360 Sprint Cars. Following the
races there will be a Pit Party in the Hospitality Pavilion for everyone
wearing a pit armband.

Appreciation Night" presented by Whelen Engineering.

All Military, Law Enforcement and Firefighters will receive free admission

recognize those who put the safety of others before their own," said Jon
Schwartz, owner.

After the action of the NASCAR Whelen All American Series, fans will be

ASCS Midwest Region Update

From Chuck Zitterich, ASCS Midwest Region Coordinator

SIOUX FALLS, SD (August 22, 2007) Rain…rain…and more rain…Holy flood
waters, Batman!

Over (5) inches of rain fell on the Jackson Speedway last Friday/Saturday
canceling the second night of one of the biggest paying races on our ASCS
Northern Plains 2007 schedule. We'll try again next year.

First, let's look at the upcoming schedule for the ASCS Northern Plains and
Midwest regions.

Up next for the ASCS Northern Plains race teams will be the (2) day
extravaganza in Brainerd, MN., the Mighty Axe Nationals, Saturday and Sunday
September 1st and 2nd. Last year over (200) total race cars checked in at
the back gate for each night which set car count records for the speedway in
Northern Minnesota.

North Central Speedway did suffer some grandstand damage over a week ago but
word is they're nicely getting things put back together and the (2) huge
year ending events are still a "go" so we hope to see a good car count for
this event. It will be one of the most fun events race fans and competitors
will have this season. Trust me. You have to be there.

We then head South to US36 Raceway in Cameron, MO on Friday September 7th
for the 2007 ASCS Midwest Region Championship race. Natalie Sather has all
but wrapped up the ASCS Midwest crown and I believe all she needs to do is
start the A feature and the title is hers. But I'm sure last seasons Midwest
Champion, Toby Chapman, will give it everything he's got and will fight
right down to the end.

We then head back north to Casino Speedway in Watertown, SD for an ASCS
Northern Points race on Saturday September 8th. Last years winner and
hometown favorite Chuck Swenson, will not be in competition as of the result
of his suspension which occurred at last weeks Jackson Nationals.

Which brings me to an important segment of this ASCS update.

There are quite a few rumors going around about what happened at Jackson and
surprisingly enough, most of these rumors come from people who weren't even
in attendance at the Jackson Nationals. Here's the facts:

We teched the top (4) cars from the A feature after the completion of Friday
night's race. When we teched the number X car, I found his cylinder heads
were in violation of the rules. After discussing this matter with the car
owner/driver, he declined the offer to pull the injection unit off for
further investigation and accepted his disqualification as it stood. The car
owner/driver has been suspended from all ASCS sanctioned events until
January 1, 2008. End of story as far as that incident is concerned.

The subject that I want to focus everybody's attention on here is this.
Racing today is a lot different from the olden days where all race teams
would build their own engines in their garage and have the local machine
shop down the street do all of their machine work. Most race teams today
simply order up their engine from a professional engine builder, and
sometimes, that engine builder is hundreds of miles from their race shop.
They buy these engines complete, dynoed and ready to simply drop in and
race.

It is your responsibility to make sure you are purchasing a legal engine for
whatever sanctioning body you plan on competing with. It is your
responsibility to make sure that your race car meets all the rules set forth
by the organization that you are competing with. We have stepped up our
teching procedures and will continue to do so.

Here's a preview of a few items that will be forth coming for the 2008 ASCS
race season:

**Changes**

As of January 1, 2008, all competitors using either FORD or MOPAR engines in
ASCS competition, must utilize the ASCS Spec Aluminum cylinder head in all
ASCS National and Regional events.

**Non Changes**

(Note – We have heard that the World of Outlaws have mandated the use of a
flat top wing with a (1) inch maximum wickerbill for the 2008 season. It
sounds like a few other 410 tracks might do the same.)

ASCS will not mandate a flat top wing with a (1) inch wickerbill for the
2008 season. It was an option in 2007 and will continue to be an option in
2008.

That's about it for this update. Hope to see everybody up in Brainerd for
the popular Mighty Axe Nationals September 1st and 2nd…CZ

NCRA Sprints Return to the Track, Mid-Nebraska Race Moved to Saturday

PARK CITY, Kan. (Aug. 21, 2007) – Following a break for the Knoxville
Nationals, it's back to the track for the O'Reilly NCRA Sprint Car Series,
presented by ICM/Ethanol.

The winged warriors race in Nebraska twice this weekend, but with one
schedule change. The Aug. 23 race scheduled for Mid-Nebraska Speedway in
Doniphan has been moved to Saturday at 7 p.m. The two race series will not
get underway on Friday in North Platte for a stop at Lincoln County Raceway.

With just three shows left, two-time defending series champion Garry Lee
Maier looks to close out the season with another crown. Maier, from
Cimarron, Kan., has a 295-point lead over Mike Peters.

This marks the second straight year for the late season Nebraska swing. Last
year at Doniphan, Maier was ninth with eventual season point runner-up J.D.
Johnson third. Maier won his fourth race of the season the following night
at North Platte, with Johnson again third.

This year, Maier is the only driver to have made all 10 features. He has
four wins, six top fives, and eight top 10s. Peters and Johnson failed to
make the feature opening night, but have each made the last nine.

Peters has been the most consistent driver this year. He has seven straight
top 10 finishes, the last six in the top five. The Wichita, Kan., pilot has
fourth-place finishes in the last four shows. His run of top 10s has moved
him to second in the standings.

Don Droud Jr., of Lincoln, Neb., had been second most of the season. He
missed the July 27 show because of a prior commitment and dropped to third
in points. Before that, he had finishes of first, ninth, and 13th.

Johnson has moved to fourth in the standings. The Goddard, Kan., hot shoe
has seven top 10 finishes in the last eight races. He has five straight top
10 finishes.

Former rookie of the year Stu Snyder has dropped to fifth. The Waverly,
Neb., driver has only one finish in the top 10 over the last four shows. He
trails Johnson by 45 points.

The series will close their season Oct. 6 as part of 81 Speedway's annual
Fall Classic.

Auto racing technology accelerates

Video, computers and the Web are changing the auto racing experience for Iowa's drivers, promoters and fans

REGISTER SPOTLIGHT: TECHNOLOGY AND MOTORSPORTS

ROB GRAY
REGISTER STAFF WRITER

Cars roar, mouses click.

Iowa race tracks and drivers — from the deepest grassroots to the most high-profile levels — are increasingly finding ways to use technology to get the word out about their sport.

A growing number of racers, such as Joe Zadina of Corning, adorn their dirt cars with cameras in an effort to convey to sponsors, friends and the world - via Web sites such as YouTube - the experience of powering a stock car through Iowa's rich dirt.

"When you're sitting up in the grandstands, the view's a little different than when you're in a race car," said Zadina, who drives in the pro streets class at Adams County Speedway.

"I mounted a camera on my helmet to kind of show (car owner Ross Griffith) what it was like to be in the car."

Race tracks such as Knoxville Raceway have so embraced Internet technology that this year 40 percent of the 90,000-plus tickets sold for the Knoxville Nationals sprint-car gala were sold online.

Three years ago, that number sat at zero.

On the national stage, meanwhile, racing continues to climb the high-tech ladder.

NASCAR and the Indy Racing League offer live Webcasts of select events.

ESPN's coverage of NASCAR includes a "Draft Cam," a view that graphically illustrates how "clean" or "dirty" the air is for a car in a race.

The message for racetrack promoters and racers alike is clear: "Ignore these developments at your own peril," said Iowa Speedway vice president and general manager Craig Armstrong.

Eagle 8/18 - Boston, Dover, Deterding, Kros and Miller Win Fan Appreciation

By Greg Soukup

EAGLE, NEB. (August 18, 2007) - Fan Appreciation Night and Kid's Night,
sponsored by McDonald's saw the largest crowd ever at Eagle Raceway. The
stands were near capacity, with 2-mile long lines of cars waiting just to
get into the facility. The warm temperatures were made a little less
oppressive by a strong southerly breeze. And the huge crowd saw what was,
bar none, some of the very best racing of the year. There was passing,
3-wide action and thrills throughout the evening.

Leading off the program was the make-up B Feature for the Budweiser 360
Championship Sprints. Jay Russell grabbed the early lead in his #76,
followed by Tige Jensen's 71, Gage Dorr in the 17 and defending track
champion Mike Boston in the 51. On the 2nd lap Boston moved past Dorr to
snag 3rd position. On the 10th lap he got around Jensen to take over 2nd in
heavy traffic and got around Russell 5 laps later to grab 1st. On the very
next lap Rodney Droud's #2X made hard contact with the wall coming out of
the 4th turn and then rolled. Droud wasn't severely hurt, but was unable to
continue due to the damage to his sprinter. On the restart it was Boston,
Russell, Jensen, Dorr and the 96KX of Adam Gullion. 2 laps later Jeff
Griffis, who was leading the points coming into the night got around Gullion
for the 5th spot. With just 6 circuits remaining Jensen move past Russell
for 2nd. At the checkered flag it was Boston, Jensen, Russell, Dorr, Brad
Krutz in the #91 and Gullion.

"It was really a good night for us" Boston said. "We missed the set-up in
the 2nd A Feature, but we're more than happy with a 1st and a 2nd;
especially after the low we had 3 weeks ago. But, that bad night just meant
we had to have a good night to make up for it" Mike finished.

The heat races were up next on the agenda. All ran smoothly with the
exception of the 4th sprint heat race. Bobby Becker's 8B made contact with
the rear of the 3G of Bill Garrow. After a number of end-over-end flips,
Becker emerged unhurt and managed to repair his sprinter and participate in
the B Feature.

During the intermission the big bicycle giveaway was held in the infield. It
took 2 semi-trailers to hold the 262 bikes that were handed out to the kids.
This event, spearheaded by Rhonda Bryan grows bigger and bigger every
year. Last year's giveaway saw only 86 bikes passed out to the younger
crowd. But, thanks to the diligent work by Rhonda and the very generous
donations of the race crews, drivers, sponsors and many local businesses
Eagle Raceway hopes to top this year's total next season.

In the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compact B Feature Kyle Schamp took
the lead and never relinquished it. Roger Elliot's 6 was in 2nd behind Shamp
's #2K with the #18 of Maynard Kinnersley in 3rd and the 0 of Rich White in
4th. Kinnersley moved around Elliot on the 3rd lap and the #62 of Justin
Busboom took over the 4th spot. Over the next 2 circuits Busboom moved into
3rd and then 2nd. With 4 laps left Rich White got back into the 4th spot.
Kinnersley lost his transfer spot for the A Feature when, with just 2 laps
left he lost his right front tire. When the race finished it was Schamp in
1st, Busboom in 2nd, White in 3rd and Elliot in 4th.

In the B Feature for the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds the 26Z of Mark
Gaspar moved into the lead, followed by the V45 of Rik Gropp, the 5ST of Dan
Wayman and the 57 of Brian Cudly. Cudly began dropping back through the
field with the 24X of Darren Hosick snagging 4th. With 5 laps left Gropp
snagged the lead from Gaspar. 3 laps later Chad Anderson advanced into the
3rd position and Hosick moved around Wayman to take over 4th. At the finish
it was Gropp, Gaspar, Anderson, Hosick and Wayman.

Next up the Budweiser Championship 360 Sprints returned to the track for the
1st of 2 B Features. Gary Reber in the 8R got the early lead, followed by
Jason Danley in the 82 and the 96KX of Adam Gullion. Danley waited only 3
laps before taking the point from Gary Reber. Gullion moved into 2nd on lap
4, but a yellow brought out by Trish Dover's #9T making contact with the
wall in turns 1 & 2 moved him back into 3rd. On the restart Ken Klabunde
moved his #28 into the 3rd spot. With only 5 laps left Klabunde then got
around Gary Reber for the last transfer spot. Gullion moved up into 3rd
position, finishing just 1 spot short of a transfer to the A Main.

In the 2nd Budweiser Championship 360 Sprint B Feature Eric Lutz had the
lead in his #20, followed by Brad Wright in the 27 and the 23R of Tadd
Holliman. Holliman got past Wright on the 3rd lap, passing him on the low
side of the track. From there until 5 laps left Holliman battled with Lutz,
swapping the lead back and forth until after getting into the 1st corner too
hard Holliman spun. When the race restarted it was Lutz with the lead, Jay
Russell's 76 in 2nd and Wright in 3rd. With just 2 laps left Russell moved
under and past Lutz for the lead. The finishing order was Russell and Lutz
transferring to the A, with Wright in 3rd.

The first A Feature of the evening featured the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA
Sport Compacts. Jason Miller took the 1st position in his #77 followed by
the #60 of Thomas Lietchi, the #3 of Harry White and Elliot Halvorsen in the
#22. White got around Lietchi for 3rd on the 2nd lap and Dan Rhiley moved
past Halvorsen for 4th on the following circuit. Rhiley then passed White
for 3rd on the next lap. With 4 laps in the books Amanda Rhiley spun her
#51, brining out the yellow flag. On the restart it was Wilson, White,
Rhiley and Lietchi. Rhiley moved into the 2nd spot with 10 laps left. 4 laps
later Halvorsen moved into the 4th spot, and then 3 laps later took over 3rd
position. When the race was over Wilson took home the win, followed by
Rhiley, the 21 of Jake Sells and Lietchi in 3rd.

"This is only my 7th week in this Prelude, but after winning 4 in a row I
just want it to be 5 straight" Wilson stated. His 4 wins were at Eagle
Raceway on the 4th of August, Beatrice Speedway on the 11th and then
Junction Motor Speedway during the Nebraska Championships earlier in the
week, with tonight's win at Eagle making 4. "I really want the win at the
Nebraska Cup in 2 weeks. That would be the topper," he said. "I need to give
a big thank you to my sponsors, Exhaust Pro and Miller Construction. Also, I
need to say that without Dan Rhiley and Rich White I never would have found
this car. They're the ones who really made all this possible" he finished.

The Valentino's Pizza IMCA Hobby Stock A Main was next on the card. Chuck
Madden Jr. took the early lead in his #2X, with Don Kros' 53 in 2nd and the
22 of Nick Beckman in 3rd. There was a complete restart however, after Rob
Brown hit the front stretch wall very hard coming out of the 4th turn. After
the restart it was again Madden Jr. in 1st, Kros in 2nd, Beckman in 3rd and
the #9 of Rex Schreiner in the 4th spot. Madden Jr.'s lead was short-lived
however, as he suffered a flat right front tire with just 3 laps in the
books. This put Kros in the lead with Beckman in 2nd, Schreiner in 3rd and
Jerry Keaton's 5K in 4th. The running order remained the same at the front
of the pack until Danny Lane's #17J suffered a flat right front tire with
only 7 laps remaining. On the restart Keaton moved under Schreiner to take
over the 3rd position, and 3 laps later Shane Hiatt moved his 21H past
Schreiner also. With only 3 laps left Beckman got around Kros, only to be
passed by both Kros and Keaton on the following circuit when Beckman got out
of shape. At the checkered flag it was Kros, Keaton, Beckman and Hiatt.

"I loved it tonight, lots better than most of the nights we've had this
year," Kros stated. "Roger always puts on a great show. They move everything
right along, and don't favor 1 class over the others. Eagle's a great place
to race," he added. Kros is in his 5th year of racing, and this was
coincidently his 5th win. Don's sponsors are Kros Construction and Extra
Touch Embroidery. "I need to thank my brother Jeff also, for all the hard
work he puts into this car every week" Kros finished.

The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds then ran their A Main. Pat Donovan
held the lead on the first lap in the #4D, with Bob Ruisinger's #7 in 2nd
and the 11X of Steve Devitt in 3rd. Chris Alcorn, defending track champion
and current points leader had advanced all the way to the 3rd spot by the
3rd lap. He then got around both Donovan and Ruisinger to take over 1st on
the ensuing circuit. On the very next lap Doug Deterding got up to the 3rd
position in the #13 with Rik Gropp's V45 in 4th. Ruisinger got around Alcorn
briefly with 10 laps left, but dropped to the 3rd spot when both Alcorn and
Deterding got past him shortly after that. With only 7 laps left Deterding
moved past Alcorn for the lead. 2 laps later Gropp moved up to the 3rd spot
behind Alcorn, only to be passed on the very next lap by Chad Anderson in
the 8C. Although Alcorn made a furious charge coming out of turns 3 & 4,
Deterding held on for his 2nd win of the season.

"I tell you what; just 3 laps more and that right rear would have grown so
big I would never have been able to turn this car" Deterding stated. "This
is the most fun I've had racing in a long, long time," he added. "But it
seems that full moons or in front of 8000 people are the only time I can
win" he joked. "I want to thank Roger and the track crew for the great
track tonight. And, I also need to thank my car owner Mike and my brother
Dave for working so I can race every week. I need to thank all my sponsors
because without them I couldn't be out here, and last of all I want to thank
all the fans for their cheers. They're what makes this whole thing fun" he
finished.

The Budweiser Championship 360 Sprints came out onto the track for the final
race of the evening. After the initial start was called back due to contact
between Josh Riggins' #14 and the 7G of Mike Gablehouse, John Klabunde moved
his #77 into 1st, with Mike Boston's #51 in 2nd, Gage Dorr's 17 in 3rd and
the #53 of 17 year-old Jack "The Gas Man" Dover in 4th. On the following lap
Boston and Dover both passed Klabunde. 5 laps later Dover put on a textbook
slide job in turns 1 & 2 to get in front of Boston. By lap #10 Dover held a
straightaway lead. Dover drove through the very heavy traffic, which had
stretched all the way around the track to finish with a ½ lap lead over
Boston at the checkers.

Jack Dover finished 3rd in points at Eagle Raceway last year, before moving
to a 410 sprint car at Knoxville Raceway this year. Despite a top finish of
6th in the 410's, Jack obviously hasn't forgotten the fast way around Eagle.
"I'm just speechless!! To win in my first time back here at Eagle, it's just
great. My folks wanted me to go to Jackson, Minnesota to race but I said
'No, I want another win at Eagle'. So, here we are" Dover said. "We'll
definitely be back for the Nebraska Cup. I can't wait!" he finished. Dover's
sponsors include Thorpe's Auto Body, Trail Performance Coatings, Northland
Motor Oils, Chase Cam, Springborg Construction Containers, Langfeldt
Overhead Door, Keizer Aluminum Wheels, 3D Auto Transport, FVP and RMS.

Be sure to come out next week as the Budweiser 360 Championship Sprints,
Valentino's Pizza IMCA Hobby Stocks, Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds and
Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compacts battle out the Season's Finale
points championship.

Special thanks to Rhonda Bryan, her family and friends, and all that helped
with Kid's Night!

Roth, Hipnar, Sink & Richards Take I-80 Features

Jim Brennan

(Greenwood, Ne., 08/19/07) The NASCAR Whelen All American Series
Chase for the Championship continued Sunday night with Travis Roth, Todd
Hipnar, Josh Sink and Matt Richards picking up feature wins. There was quite
a crowd on Dodge Dealers Fan Appreciation night at the speedway.

The evening kicked off with Grand National Feature event and there were 3
Restarts before they could get a lap in. When they finally got the race
under way
Gary Leapley threaded the needle between Shawn Harker and Jacob Brown for
the early lead. Leapley would hold the lead until lap 5 when point leader
Todd
Hipnar made the pass for the lead. Hipnar would lead the rest of the way
despite a
couple of restarts that put Ron Tex Jr. right on his bumper. For Hipnar it
was his 4th
win on of the year as he stretched out his point lead a little bit. Matt
Buller finished 3rd ahead of Brad Soll and Harker.

The Pro-Modified feature saw "Iron Mike" Johnson take the early lead. Buzz
Wilson and
Matt Richards came along to challenge Johnson and it was side by side and
nose to tail
for several laps. Richards passed Wilson for 2nd on lap 13 and proceeded to
reel in Johnson. On lap 14 Richards running the high groove passed Johnson
and went on to record his first win of the year. Wilson got passed Johnson
for 2nd with Jeff Stephens and
Reece Coffee rounding out the top 5. On a restart early in the race Stephens
had a flat tire
And had to go to the pits. He came back out in 20th place and proceeded to
make his way to that 4th place finish.

Mike Mass and Brandon Wergin would battle for the early lead in the Hobby
Stock feature with Wergin in front by the end of lap 1. Wergin would hold
the lead til lap 11
when a flat tire sidelined him and Josh Sink inherited the lead. Sink said
his car was running with only 10lbs of oil pressure most of the race. After
he took the checkered flag
on his 3rd feature win his motor blew up on him. Rick Munson drove a heak of
a race in battling for the win before settling for 2nd ahead of Jesse
Sobbing, Tom Myers and
Mass.

The Late Model feature saw the Zeitner brothers Al and "Lightning Leon" on
The front row and they battled for the early lead before Leon took control.
John Nicholson passed Zeitner for the lead on lap 3 and then set sail in the
high groove of the track. Nicholson held the lead til a lap 23 restart when
Travis Roth made the pass
that earned him his 2nd feature win of the year. Nicholson held on to 2nd
ahead of Leon
Zeitner. Co-point leaders Al Humphrey and Joe Kosiski came through the pack
to
finish 4th and 6th with Al Zeitner in 5th.

Saturday Night Season Championships Decided At I-80

Jim Brennan

(Greenwood, Ne., 08/18/07) The NASCAR Whelen All American Series
Season Championship races were held Saturday night with Ron Tex Jr.,
Kortney Kosiski, Scott Carlson, Shawn Bulin, Pete Fink Jr., Kennin Colestock
And Dan Satriano taking feature wins in their respective classes.

The Pro-Stock 18 lap feature saw Jim Kruse take the early lead only to lose it
in turn 2 to Shawn Bulin. Bulin led the rest of the way for his feature win of the year.
Larry Robinson Jr. closed on him late in the race but ran out of laps and had to
settle for second ahead of Tim Podraza, Scotty Hartman and Jason Cieslik.
Bulin also won the track championship. The top 2 rookie contenders Doug Stevenson
and Nick Deal finished 7th and 8th.

The 25 lap Crate Late Model feature saw Dwane Pospisil take the early lead. But it was short lived as Brad Soll passed him on the back chute. Soll stayed in front til about 5 laps left when Ron Tex Jr. blew by him on the high side of the track and went on to record his 1st win of the season overSoll, Joe Kosiski, Jason Hobscheidt and Kenny Edwards.
Hobscheidt is the 2007 Track Champion.

For the second week in a row the Novice Crate Late Models saw another career milestone win for a young lady, Kortney Kosiski. Mike Gillespie took the early lead and held it til lap 5 when Kosiski took over. Last week’s winner Mollee Collins ended up 2nd after Kenny Bartram’s car was too light crossing the scales. Gillespie held on for 3rd ahead of Rob Kosiski, Ryan Gladwin and Lindsey Yost. Gladwin ended up winning the Track
Points Title.

The B-Modified feature saw Nick Hermsen grab the early lead. But point leader Jared
Hoefelman shot through the pack and took the lead on lap 3. Scott Carlson took 2nd on lap 7 and began to real Hoefelman in. Carlson was hooking up on the high side of the track
And passed Hoefelman with 5 to go. Carlson went on to his 7th feature win of the year but
Hoefelman, a rookie, won his first Track Championship. Harry Nixon, Hermsen and Floyd Richards rounded out the top 5 in the feature.

Dan Satriano was the only 305 Sprint Car to show up, so he won his first feature of the year against himself.

The Pro-Hornet Feature saw Pete Fink Jr. pick up his first career win over Steve McConnell, Steve England, Joe Baker and last years champion Austin Kurtzer.
Justin Soule with a 7th place finish took the track championship over Baker and England.

The Novice Hornet feature saw Kennin Colestock lead from start to finish for his 2nd win of the year. Alex Fink came on to take 2nd over Dan Rasmussen, Russell Johnson and Sarah Preble. Fink won the Track Championship.

The Pace Lap - August 16, 2007

Compliments:

I had high hopes for the Huskerland Wingless 410 Sprint Car Nationals. A crop of top-notch wingless drivers, ASCS Midwest, and a $1000 to win IMCA Modified show was on the bill.

I was NOT disappointed.

The track was in excellent shape, smooth, racy and held up despite 90+ degree temperatures. It was run well and got over before 11. The crop of wingless drivers was led by the likes of Tim Kaeding, Dave Darland, Casey Shuman and a lot of others who can compete anywhere they drop their trailer ramp.

There were no slouches in the 360s either. One-time Outlaws Brian Brown, Shane Stewart and Billy Alley battled alongside Jack Dover, Toby Chapman, Don Droud, Jr., Chuck Swenson, Larry Pinegar, and....

The Modifieds were stacked, too. Jet, Stephan, Homan, Grabouski, Hadan, Richards...again, guys who are up front wherever they run. I haven't seen a more competitive field of Modifieds top-to-bottom in one place this year, and that includes USMTS shows I've been to.

Three features, three down-to-the-wire finishes. Darland nipping Kaeding in the wingless, Grabouski snatching first in the Mods, and local young gun Dover holding off the challenges from the veterans to take his first ASCS win.

As one of the I-80 promoters said before the race, "I've got a good field of cars, I need a good field of fans!" They could've used more. The show delivered - hopefully there isn't "Knoxville lag of time and money" holding people back. Save the money and vacation time up for this one next year folks - it's worth it. I-80 showed they can deliver.

Other related and unrelated thoughts:

-Flat Out Magazine had "Where's Sammy" on the cover of a recent issue. Well, Sammy was in the pits at I-80 Tuesday, helping out Damion Gardner as a "hired gun" on the TNT Midwestern Swing.

-The action at the front of Tuesday's Modified A feature took away from folks noticing the great drive by Chevy Hadan. After falling out of his heat race, charging from the back of the B, he worked his way up from the back of the A feature to finish third.

-Congrats to Chris Alcorn for defending his Eagle IMCA Modified championship. Chris holds an 81-point lead over Doug Deterding with just two point shows remaining. Even if Deterding won both A features (40 points each), and Chris didn't show up at the track, Alcorn would still win by a point. The 11 wins on the season are an Eagle Raceway IMCA Modified record. The overall record for features in a season is 16 by Ed Kosiski in 1998.

The dilemma:

While I've been critical of some drivers behavior regarding on/off track actions, I hesitate to say anything about a driver's style, racing, etc.

I'm making an exception for drivers who don't choose to run competitively but instead they're "out there living the dream." Look, I have full respect for you running out there. I haven't got the nuts to even go around the track as slow as you do, but please - stay out of the middle of the pack!

An accomplished driver in the pits commented that the "lapped traffic is making this race (I-80's Tuesday ASCS A feature) interesting!" It wasn't a compliment. I'm not knocking people TRYING to get better - though maybe they're not a threat to win the A. Maybe their goal is just to make the A, maybe it's to finish in the top ten, heck maybe it's just not running last in the B. But, they are trying to get better and they're trying to improve.

But I have issues with guys who run just for the sake of being on a racetrack, and choose to run "in the groove" with faster traffic. Again, I don't care if you're racing the guy in front of you for second-to-last, that's fine. But if you're out there putting around by yourself, MOVE.

First and foremost, there's enough danger out there without drivers trying to play sprint car Frogger dodging rolling roadblocks. Second, show some respect to the guys who are putting in just as much if not more time, devotion and money into their machines and are choosing to compete.

Eagle Raceway Schoolbuses a Roadside Attraction?

I noticed this while reading an article in the Lincoln Journal Star on alternate routes to Omaha from Lincoln.

In the sidebar of the article, route #3 describes heading out of Lincoln on Hwy 34, then north on Hwy 63 through Alvo.

Sharing distinctions with other routes' "along the way" attractions such as Linoma Beach, the Wahoo Torpedo Monument, Rosenblatt and Offutt, are the Eagle Raceway Schoolbuses, which after the demo derby will lie in perpetuity to become monuments. :-)

I got a kick out of it. Here's the article - the routes are in the sidebar to the right:

Darland Edges "TK" in Sprint Bandits TNT Huskerland Nationals

Lonnie Wheatley, GREENWOOD, Neb (August 14, 2007) – The Third Annual O'Reilly Sprint Bandits Tour 'N Topless Midwest Swing kicked off in spectacular fashion with Lincoln, Indiana's Dave Darland nipping California's Tim Kaeding at the line to capture his first career TNT feature win in Tuesday night's 30-lap Huskerland Non-Wing Sprint Car Nationals main event at Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway.

Darland wrestled the lead away from Kaeding on the 23rd lap and, after battling for the point over the final rounds, Darland took the checkered flag with a miniscule 0.052-second advantage over Kaeding to give the Trucker's 24-Hour Road Service No. 10 entry its first triumph in Sprint Bandits TNT action.

"I knew Tim (Kaeding) was going to be trying hard on the high side in the last corner, so I tried to go into turn three in the middle," Darland commented in victory lane as he displayed his $4,000 winner's share in the form of 2,000 two dollar bills. "I knew I wanted to come off turn four on the bottom where the moisture was, so I couldn't really run it into three too hard."

While fifth-starting Darland and fourth-starter Kaeding ultimately fought it out for the win, the duo spent the early portion of the race chasing R.J. Johnson and Bud Kaeding, as Johnson paced the opening 14 rounds after outgunning polesitter Bud Kaeding for the point after the initial start was red-flagged for Damion Gardner's turn three tumble. Gardner was uninjured but done for the night.

Following the initial aborted start, the race ran in non-stop fashion with the 21 remaining starters all taking the checkered flag in a feature event that just took nine minutes and 56 seconds.

Arizona's Johnson led the early rounds in front of Bud Kaeding, Darland and Tim Kaeding, with Bud Kaeding and Darland trading the runner-up spot on the seventh and eighth rounds. Tim Kaeding began making the topside work dividends, relegating Darland to fourth on the tenth lap and then overtaking brother Bud Kaeding for second two rounds later.

Tim Kaeding closed the narrow gap on Johnson and charged into the lead as the midway point was displayed, two laps after Darland had taken third from Bud Kaeding.

With Tim Kaeding leading the way, Darland and Bud Kaeding both raced past Johnson by the 17th round and battled for the second position for several laps before Darland took command of second on the 21st lap.

Having outlasted Bud Kaeding, Darland set his sights on Tim Kaeding and edged into the lead on the 23rd lap. With Darland working the low side and Tim Kaeding up top, the pair battled in side-by-side fashion over the final laps.

As the white flag flew, the duo entered turn one wheel-to-wheel. Kaeding surged ahead through the corner, but gripping the low side of the track Darland charged back ahead with front wheels clawing at the air as they raced off turn two.

Kaeding used his top-side momentum to move back ahead through turns three and four, but Darland's strong run of the bottom of turn four proved to be the deciding factor as he took the checkered flag in the closest finish in Sprint Bandits TNT history.

"For a guy that hasn't run much, if at all, without a wing, Tim did a great job," Darland commented.

Kaeding, making just his second career wingless start and first in three years, settled for runner-up honors as he opened his assault upon the TNT crown, with Bud Kaeding taking show honors after finishing second in the initial two editions of the Huskerland Non-Wing Sprint Car Nationals.

Cory Kruseman climbed from tenth to finish fourth, with Jerry Coons, Jr., rounding out the top five. R.J. Johnson crossed the stripe sixth, with 13th-starter Neil Shepherd, last year's Huskerland Non-Wing Nationals winner Robert Ballou, Brady Short and Hunter Schuerenberg completing the top ten.

Bud Kaeding, Johnson, Tim Kaeding and Coons claimed heat race wins, with Ballou, Short, Bud Kaeding and Schuerenberg each earning qualifying race wins among the 30-car field.

Cole Whitt made a last-lap pass of Bret Mellenberndt to win the "B" Main and then climbed from 19th to finish eleventh in the feature event.

The five-race O'Reilly Sprint Bandits TNT Midwest Swing moves on to Mid-America Speedway in South Coffeyville, OK, on Wednesday night and then Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, OK, on Thursday night before wrapping up with two nights at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, KS, on Friday and Saturday.

Dover Takes First ASCS Win with Midwest Score at I-80

Lonnie Wheatley, GREENWOOD, Neb. (August 14, 2007) – Jack Dover earned his first career American Sprint Car Series feature win by topping Tuesday night's 25-lap ASCS Midwest Region main event at Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway.

After starting third, Dover took the lead from Chuck Swenson on the fifth round then held off the charges of Shane Stewart over the final rounds to secure the win aboard Marc and Lori Dover's Eckley-powered 3D Auto Transport/Keizer Wheels No. 53 Eagle.

"I've been trying to get this first ASCS win for two years now, it feels great to finally get it," the 17-year-old Springfield, NE, racer commented afterwards. "I could hear Shane there and knew I had to get going."

Swenson outgunned polesitter Stewart for the early lead, with Dover taking second from Stewart by the third round. Dover quickly went to work on Swenson and charged by to take command on the fifth circuit.

Working through heavy lapped traffic, Dover's lead over Swenson and Stewart was erased when the caution flew after 15 laps for his younger sister, Trish Dover, who came to a stop on the low side of turn three with front end damage.

Back under way, Stewart and Swenson battled for second behind Jack Dover with Stewart taking the position before the caution flew after 18 laps for Ryan Roberts' disabled mount.

Working the high line, Stewart challenged Dover for the lead over the next several rounds with Dover successfully fighting off the bids. As the pair split the lapped car of Jason Becker on the white-flag lap with Dover on the low side and Stewart up top, Becker flipped to bring out the red flag.

Set for a green-white-checkered run, Swenson and Stewart traded the runner-up slot as action resumed, thus allowing Dover to slip away to a slight advantage. Dover streaked underneath the checkered flag with Stewart in second and Swenson in the show position.

Don Droud, Jr., snared fourth, with Larry Pinegar II rounding out the top five. Seth Brahmer was sixth, with defending series champion Toby Chapman, Brian Brown, Lee Grosz and 19th-starter Billy Alley completing the top ten.

Moving one step closer to making history by becoming the first female champion in ASCS history, North Dakota's Natalie Sather crossed the stripe eleventh to maintain a 78-point lead over Chapman with just one ASCS Midwest Region event remaining.

Swenson, Chapman and Pinegar topped heat race action.

Johnson Sweeps URSS High Plains Shootout

From URSS:

The Third Annual High Plains Shootout lived up to its name at the Decatur County Fairgrounds as the URSS 305 Traveling Series rolled into town. Despite the hot temperatures and clear skies overhead, the Oberlin Speedway took a direct hit as “The Kansas Tornado” Jon Johnson swept the twin features.

Goddard Kansas Driver Josh Fairbank brought the field to the green flag and jumped out to the early lead as Elwood Nebraska’s Bill Hays settled into the second spot followed by Ken Lutters, Johnson and Reed Bernbeck in the fifth spot. Tenth Starting Johnson worked his way up to the runner up spot on lap three and grabbed the top spot on lap four. Josh Fairbank held onto the runner spot as the battle for the position heated up with Lutters, current URSS Point Leader Smokey Fairbank and Randy Bantam joined the fray.

Lap nine saw Justin Schwien take the fifth spot from Bantam and set his sights on the duo of Smokey Fairbank and Lutters. The trio of drivers had a heated battle for the next ten laps as they wove their way through traffic until Schwien made his move to the third position on lap 20 and set his sights on second running Josh Fairbank. Lap twenty-one saw Smokey Fairbank make the pass for the fourth spot to join the battle for the runner up position.

Schwien made the pass for the second spot with two to go as the battle for the third position heated up. With one to go, Smokey Fairbank took the third spot relegating Josh Fairbank to the fourth spot. As the checkers flew Johnson picked up the win with Schwien, Smokey Fairbank, Josh Fairbank and Ken Lutters rounding out the top five.

The Weld Racing Wheels “Hard Charger Award” went to Jon Johnson who came from his tenth starting spot to take the win.

Heat Race winners were Bill Hays, Josh Fairbank and Justin Schwien.

Jordan injured in Eagle Sprint Crash

EAGLE, NE (August 4, 2007) - Lincoln, NE sprint car driver Jay Jordan
suffered multiple injuries after a heat race crash Saturday night, August 4.
While racing Adam Gullion, contact was made on the backstretch, sending
Jordan tumbling in turn three along the outside guardrail. The car came to a
stop in the bottom of turn three with Jordan momentarily unconscious and the
motor still at full throttle.

Jordan was transfered to a Lincoln hospital and was in surgery until 3:30
Sunday morning. His list of injuries include: shattered ankle, broken leg,
cracked vertebrae, concussion, burns from his seat belts, and "red eye," a
condition where the intensity of the roll causes ocular blood vessels to

Oliver, Alcorn, Beckman and Miller Win at Eagle Raceway

Oliver, Alcorn, Beckman and Miller Win the Sizzlin’ August Night
By Greg Soukup

With temperatures in the 90’s and the typical Nebraska humidity, Sizzlin’ August Nights presented by Z92 and Jack Daniels lived up to it’s name. The weather did nothing to dampen the fans’ enjoyment or the racing at Eagle Raceway, America’s Home Track.

First on the night’s agenda were the make-up features from the preceding week, which were washed out by rain.

The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds took to the track first for their make-up B Feature. Early in the race there was a large pileup in turn #4. Taking the point on the restart was the #1S of Shane Thone followed by Jan Korth in the 42K, the 11AA of Ed “Doc” Raines and the 22J of Justin Jurgens. With 9 laps left Jurgens moved into the 3rd spot, passing Raines. After a caution for debris from the 8A of Dusty Anderson the 24X of Darren Hosick moved into fourth, advancing to third a short time later. At the flag the order was the 95B of Nic Bonney, the 3A of Aaron Pella, Hosick’s 24X and the 22J of Jurgens.

Next was the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compact make-up A Main. At the outset the leader was the 26 of Derrick Dreamer with the #6 of Roger Elliot in second, the 22 of Elliot Halvorson in third and the 2M of David White in fourth. Just 3 laps in White drove the 2M hard into the front stretch wall, bringing out the yellow flag. He was unable to continue. The running order at the restart was Dreamer, Elliot, Dan Rhiley in the 2 and Mike Rice’s #24. On the following lap Rhiley moved around Elliot to take over 2nd and the following lap got around Dreamer for the lead. 3 laps later Kyle Schamp had moved all the way up to 4th spot, and took third place on the following circuit. The 62 of Justin Busboom moved into 4th on that same lap. At the finish it was Rhiley, Dreamer, Schamp and Busboom.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks then took to the track for their make-up feature. Dan Jackson grabbed the point in his #98 with the 94 of Mike Hansen, Rex Schreiner’s 9 and the 12 of Dan Noonan in hot pursuit. On the 4th circuit Schreiner moved inside of Hansen for 2nd, and on the next lap Rich Small got around Noonan for fourth in his #11X. With 8 laps down Ron Novak lost the nosepiece from his #14, bringing out the caution flag. On the restart lap, Small moved to the inside to take over the third spot. With only 2 laps left Schreiner got very loose allowing Schreiner to garner 2nd spot. The final results showed Jackson taking home the win followed by Rex Schreiner, Brad Schreiner in the #10 and the 10K of Lee Kracht in fourth.

“I have to thank my wife and kids again for all they do for me” Jackson said. “I also need to give a special thanks to all of my sponsors for giving me the car to win tonight” he added. Jackson’s sponsors include Andersen Overhead Doors, Richards Machine, Allied Tire & Oil, Extreme Race Signs, 92 Motorsports and Bob Payne Lawn Service & Landscaping. “Most of all I want to thank all my family, friends and especially all of my fans” Jackson finished.

Once again the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds rolled onto the racing surface for their make-up A Feature. At the end of the first lap Tom Lenz jumped out to the lead in his #44 with the 4D of Pat Donovan in 2nd, the #57 of Brian Cudly in third and Tim Pickens in fourth in his 00. On the 2nd lap Pickens got Cudly and then passed Donovan for 2nd on the subsequent circuit. On that same lap Norm Ziegenbein got around Cudly to take fourth. Shortly there after Donovan spun out Pickens, bringing out the yellow flag; and Donovan went to the pits. At the restart it was Lenz, Cudly, Ziegenbein, the 11X of Steve Devitt and the V45 of Rik Gropp. Gropp temporarily moved around Devitt but lost control and hit the tire at the pit entrance. When the green flag flew again Ziegenbein moved up to 2nd position with the #13 of Doug Deterding taking over the 3rd spot. On the next lap Chris Alcorn moved into the 4th position. It took Deterding only 1 lap to get into 2nd position behind Ziegenbein who had taken over the lead from Lenz. With 10 laps left, Deterding got around Ziegenbein for the lead. 2 laps later there was another caution flag, bunching the field yet again. For the next 4 circuits Alcorn & Ziegenbein battled side-by-side until Alcorn finally made the pass with 6 laps left. The battle then moved to Deterding with Alcorn taking the lead in turn 2 with 2 laps remaining. Deterding was unable to re-pass him and had to settle for second place behind Alcorn again.

When the Busch Light Wingless 360 Sprints took their turn on the high-banked 1/3 mile oval the most serious incident of the evening took place. With 3 laps left in the first heat Adam Gullion got around Jay Jordan going into turn #3. Jordan attempted to move back under Gullion, but ended up contacting the rear of Gullion’s sprinter; this lead to a horrendous series of flips around turn #3. Jordan had to be extricated from his sprinter and was taken into the hospital for the sake of precaution. At this time, no further word has been received as to Jordan’s condition.

After all of the remaining heats were run the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compacts came out for their B Feature. Jeremy Noonan snagged the point in his #33 followed by the 63 of Mike Simpson, the 4U of James Snelling and the 51 of Amanda Rhiley. With 3 laps in the books Rhiley moved around Snelling for 3rd. The leaders stayed the same until with 4 laps left Mike Simpson rolled several times in turn #3 after contact with Maynard Kinnersley’s #18. On the restart it was Jeremy Noonan, Amanda Rhiley, Maynard Kinnersley and Barry Kinnersley in his #00. On the white flag lap Barry passed his father to take over 3rd.

In the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock B Main it was Casey Moyer getting the early lead from the pole position. Rex Schreiner’s #9 was in 2nd, the #53 of Don Kros in third and Dan Noonan’s #12 in fourth. Noonan managed to get inside of Kros briefly with 5 laps down, but Kros held him off to maintain 3rd. The finishing order was Moyer, Schreiner, Kros and Noonan.

When the B Feature for the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds took the green flag Jan Korth in the #42K made contact with the #24X of Darren Hosick. Hosick struck the turn 1 wall hard, and was unable to continue. The running order at the restart was the #52 of Sean Manning, the 42K of Korth, Todd Jones in the T32 and Justin Jurgens’ 22J. With just 5 laps remaining Jones moved into the 2nd spot. 2 laps later Manning spun in turn 2. On the next circuit Dylan Smith got all the way to the 2nd spot in his #95, with Aaron Pella taking his #3A to 4th. Jones spun in turns 1 & 2 on the very last lap. The results showed Smith taking the checkers first followed by Korth, the 95B of Nic Bonney and the 4D of Pat Donovan in fourth.

Then it was A Feature time, with the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compacts going first. Jason Miller took advantage of his front row starting position to lead the race wire-to-wire in his #77. There was plenty of action behind him though. On the 3rd lap Dan Rhiley moved his #2 around the #6 of Roger Elliot for the 2nd spot. With 11 laps to go Jake Sells moved into the 3rd spot in his #21. Kyle Schamp got into 4th position with just 6 laps left. At the checkers it was Miller, Rhiley, Sells & Schamp.

“If I get this Prelude out in front, noone can touch it. I want to thank Dan Rhiley and Rich White, because they’re the ones who found it for me. I knew what I wanted, but it took almost all year to find it” Miller stated. “I think I’ll stick with the Prelude, because Honda will make it happen all of the time out here,” he added. “The track was great again tonight, and if we have a good track at Beatrice next weekend, I plan on winning there also” he finished.

The Valentino’s Pizza IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature followed the Sport Compacts. Nick Beckman moved from his starting position to grab the point in his #22 with Dan Jackson’s #98, the #14 of Ron Novak and the 92 of Don Hall Jr. right behind him. Novak took to the infield with 8 laps left and dropped from the race. At the restart it was Beckman, Jackson, Hall Jr. and the #11X of Rich Small. Small left the race with just 4 laps left due to a flat right rear tire. Beckman held on for the victory with Jackson, Hall Jr. and the 10K of Lee Kracht in 2nd thru 4th.

“The only things I wanted to accomplish this year were to win an A Feature and take home Rookie of the Year out here, and it looks like I’ve managed to do both” Beckman said. “First off, I want to thank my sponsors, and of course all of my fans” he added. Beckman’s sponsors include Terry’s Body Shop, Athey Painting, Speedy Steve’s High Performance, Trade Center Automotive, JC Plumbing and Spyder Race Cars. “I need to send a special thank you to my wife Courtney, my Mom & Dad, Jason Oswald, Steve, Aaron Pella and Brian Cudly” he stated. “This was the best track we’ve had all year. It was really great” he finished.

The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modified A Main was next. Dusty Anderson led the field in his 8A with Jerry Trejo’s #4T, the 5ST of Dan Wayman and the 00 of Tim Pickens behind him. On the second lap Wayman went very high in turn 4, allowing Pickens to move under him into third. On the next lap Norm Ziegenbein lost the drive shaft from his #1Z, causing a caution. Justin Jurgens took his #22J to the 4th spot on the restart, and advanced into 3rd on the following lap. By the time 6 laps had been run Chris Alcorn had moved up into the 5th spot, and on the next circuit took over 4th. It took him only 2 more laps to get into the 2nd spot. With 8 laps left Chad Anderson got into 4th. 2 laps later Alcorn took over the lead from Dustin. With only 6 laps remaining Chad Anderson moved into 3rd position behind Dustin with the V45 of Rik Gropp taking over the 4th spot. Chad attempted a last lap pass on Dustin, moving under him and nearly taking the position away but Dustin held on for 2nd.

“I’ve never won a double-header feature before. We were hoping we could be fortunate enough to win Thursday and then make it 3 in a row, but we tore up the car really bad that night. I actually was afraid that we might be having another month like last June, but tonight’s wins hopefully put a stop to that,” Alcorn stated. “I need to thank all of my sponsors of course, but I really want to thank Roger and all of the Eagle Raceway staff for the great racing we have here. I truly believe that if the track stays like this that people will get used to it, adjust their cars according and we can have even better racing” he added. “This really helps in the national points deal. Right now we’re focusing on getting the necessary 30 starts in. We’ll be taking a shot at Beatrice next weekend for sure” he finished.

The last event on the program was the Busch Light Wingless 360 Sprints. A visitor to Eagle Raceway, Tyler Spath from California grabbed the early lead in his #KR14; hoping to duplicate his heat race win. John Klabunde tucked his #77 in behind Spath followed by the 7X of Kevin Danley and the #45 of Jeff Lowery. On the 4th lap Gerod Olivier took his #2X around Lowery and Danley to take over the 3rd spot. 4 laps later Tige Jensen also got around Lowery in his #71 for fourth. With just 5 laps remaining Spath spun at the bottom of turns 1 & 2. Klabunde unfortunately made contact with Spath, ruining his right rear tire. “I just set the car up way too lose for the track conditions” Spath said. “It was my call, and I screwed up” he added. “This is a truly great facility you have here. I love it, and I’m really glad that we stopped here on our way to Knoxville. It was a lot of fun” he finished. When the green flag flew again it was Olivier, Jensen, Lowery and Danley. On the very last lap Adam Gullion got around Danley for the 4th finishing position.

This was Gerod’s 4th win of the season, having never finished lower than 4th place in any of his races. “This is just too cool to be racing here at Eagle. You’ve got lots of fans, a high level of competition; it’s just a great place to learn at” he said. “I need to thank everyone who helps out with the car. They are Jeff Davis, Doug Olivier and of course my wife Christina. Also a big thanks to all of my sponsors” he concluded. Gerod’s sponsors include Fabric Graphics, Total Fire Protection, Doug’s Auto Body, ZigenQuip Equipment and MidStates Asbestos Removal and Demolition.

Next week Eagle Raceway will be hosting “Monster Jam” on both Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th. Kid’s admission is just $5, so come on out and enjoy two nights of excitement.

Regular racing will resume on the 18th of August when McDonalds presents ‘Kids Night’ and Fan Appreciation Night. Admission is only $5, with children 5 and under free. There will be lots & lots of bikes and other prizes for the youngsters, so don’t miss this!! On the card will be the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compacts, the Valentino’s Pizza IMCA Hobby Stocks, the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds and double features for the Budweiser Championship 360 sprints.

A Pre-packaged Show

What if all the cars in a class were owned by the track - kind of like the way all the Monster Trucks are owned by Clear Channel? Do you end up with a series where fans root for the car and not the driver?

Speaking of unknown drivers, who drives "Grave Digger" anyway? Hint - it's more than one person, actually it's SEVEN.

The idea of packaging a class is being kicked around by a local promoter. The identity is not a secret, but I wanted to keep the discussion to the concept, not let the discussion wander to the individual.

On one hand, I understand the premise - it makes a class easy to manage, easy to pay (you don't) and the logic is that for what you spend in purse and other expenses, you could just run the class yourselves and not deal with any of the usual promoter/owner hassle. In a time where car counts are uncertain, and where promoters are struggling, it makes sense for a promoter to be able to control as many aspects of their program's destiny.

While it "makes sense on paper," would it play out in the real world? I can't endorse the idea, but I don't know why not. I can't see a bad reason for this, but I just can't bring myself to get on board with the idea.

CART and Formula One are loosely like this; the owners have a stake in the company running them. But neither series is exactly thriving. IROC is a perfect example, but again the series is on hold with no title sponsor.

If it were a touring group consisting of nothing but the group of single-owned cars, then I'm all for it. But a weekly show...I'm not sure. I think the one issue that comes up is what do you do with other cars that want to race but aren't owned by the one person.

Do you let them run? If so do you pay them?

Are the fans going to be content with the same group of people each week (they get that for the most part in a weekly show anyway).

What about other people who want to race - do they need to buy a car, buy a spot, "apply" for a position?

Who maintains the cars and will they devote the kind of time when it's someone else's car? For safety reasons alone that's an issue.

There are a LOT of logistics to deal with, which in the end may be more troublesome than the headaches the current system brings on. It's going to take a lot of level-headedness and cooperation, neither of which seem to flow freely around the business of racing.

So how do I feel about it?

I don't know.
