NCRA Late Models at JMS July 1

From NCRA

PARK CITY, Kan. (June 27, 2006)

With victories in two of the last three features, defending series champion Kelly Boen has moved to within 45 points of the top spot in the O’Reilly NCRA Late Model Series, presented by ICM/Ethanol.

Steve Kosiski opened the season with two wins and has stayed on top of the standings. His June 17 victory at Dodge City (Kan.) Raceway Park gave him three wins in the first four shows and a 115-point lead over Boen. Both drivers are still running well – it’s just that Boen has been running a little better.

In the three shows since then, they each have three top five finishes. Kosiski has a second, third, and fifth; Boen has a pair of wins and a fifth.

On the season, Kosiski has seven top five finishes in as many shows. Boen can almost match those numbers, with a 12th-place finish at Lucas Oil Speedway being the only blemish.

With 11 races to go, including three this weekend, the championship is still definitely up for grabs. They make the first of two visits this season to Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb., on Saturday. Boen won two of three shows there last year and was fifth in the other. Kosiski raced there twice, finishing fourth and fifth.

Sunday the late models roll onto the famed Belleville (Kan.) High Banks where Boen has really been on a tear. He has won the last three shows at Belleville, including June 18. Kosiski hasn’t done as well, running fifth in June. Last year he was third in one show but didn’t make it out of the B-feature in the other.

They close the Fourth of July weekend with their annual visit to State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City on July 3. Boen wasn’t at last year’s show while Kosiski finished fourth.

Boen has a comfortable margin over Brett LaFollette, who holds third place by only 50 points over Billy Murphy. Rookie of the year point leader Steve Kempt trails Murphy by 57 points in the overall standings. Rookie of the year contender Gary Billings is sixth, only 14 points behind Kempt.

Only 105 points separate positions seven through 10. After winning his first-ever NCRA late model feature last weekend Johnny Bone Jr. is seventh, tied for eighth are former champions Delbert Smith (2001) and Al Purkey (2003-2004), while Ted Martin is tenth.

Something a little different

Here's a panoramic image of the whole water truck debacle and the onlookers at Eagle Saturday night.

The image is a series of 7 pictures stitched together in Photoshop. If printed out in full resolution, it would be 57 inches wide by 7.5 inches tall. This one's a little smaller :-)

JOE KOSISKI, LIVINGSTON, FOOTE & BERGREN TAKE NASCAR FEATURES AT I-80 SPEEDWAY
By Jim Brennan

(Greenwood, Ne., 6/25/06) The action of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series
keeps getting hotter at I-80 Speedway as Joe Kosiski, Dave Livingston, Brian
Foote and Brad Bergren came away with hard fought victories Sunday night.

The Dodge Super Late Model 25 lap feature started with Joe Kosiski and Joe
Julian on the front row based on the one week point average. Kosiski jumped in
front as Jim Stannard waved the green flag with Mike Wallace following in
2nd. Wallace, Leon Zeitner and Al Zeitner would wage a spirited battle for
the 2nd spot before Leon took it on lap 14. But Ed Kosiski was on the move
from his 9th starting position. With the help of several caution periods Ed
was able to move into 2nd on lap 18. He managed to reel his brother in
but could’nt get past him either high or low and had to settle for 2nd. Joe is
currently leading the Division II points and this was his 3rd feature win on
his home track. Ed is leading the track points in his Dodge sponsored Late
Model, but has yet to secure a win on the season.

The Home Pride Pro-Modified feature saw Justin Clark grab the early lead
followed by Tom Flegg. Mike Johnson, who started 8th and Brian Foote, who
started 7th moved into 3rd and 4th on lap 2. Foote took the lead on lap 4 and held
it til a lap 10 restart when Mike Meyers got by him. Foote stayed right with him
and started testing spots on the track and plotting his strategy. Finally with 1
lap left Foote made a high side pass to retake the lead and go on to his 2nd
win of the year. He is the current point leader. Jeremiah Sillman, Clark and
Johnson rounded out the top 5.

Gary Leapley had been plagued by bad luck so far in 2006. So he went back
to the drawing board and brought out his 2005 car. He started the Grand
National feature on the pole and flew out front followed by Trevor Millikan.
After a lap 2 restart Leapley started putting distance between himself and the
rest of the field. Dave Livingston, who started 10th, was making his way to
the front and waged a 3 way battle for 2nd with Millikan and Todd Hipnar.
Livingston won that battle on lap 13 and began to run down Leapley.
A yellow flag with 3 laps left put Livingston right on Leapley’s bumper.
Livingston then challenged Leapley and finally on the last lap got past him
on the back chute and went on to take the checkers first.

The Stereo West Auto Toys Hobby Stock feature saw “Sponge Bob”
Kracher take the early lead from Jeremy Smith. Kracher lost his lead on
lap 2 when the driveshaft exited his car. Justin Leach inherited the lead
only to lose it moments later to Jesse Sobbing. Leach got the lead back
when Sobbing’s car caught fire and went to the infield. A lap 14 restart saw Brad
Bergren take the lead and go on to his first win of the year. In winning Bergrin
picked up an extra $200 bonus from Tom and Tiff’s Family Restaurant in
Glenwood, Iowa.

NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action continues next Sunday with the Firecracker
Spectacular and Military Appreciation night and huge Fireworks. There will also be
Double Super Late Model Features. Then on Monday it will be the Lawrence Ideus
Memorial Race featuring the ASCS Midwest Region and Northern Plains Region Sprint
Car Series. Sunday nights hot laps are at 6 with racing at 6:30. Monday night hot
Laps will be at 7 with racing beginning at 7:30.

Five First Time Winners at I-80

FEYEN, BRUCK, DOVER, HUTCHISON, MORGAN & SOULE
FIRST TIME FEATURE WINNERS AT I-80
Jim Brennan

(Greenwood, Ne., 6/24/06) What a night of NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series racing
action that included a 15 minute wait for a rain shower. The fans who stuck it
out saw 5 first time winners for 2006 in Joe Feyen, Kevin Bruck, Trish Dover, Corey
Hutchison, Todd Morgan and Justin (Soulman Jr) Soule.

The Pro-am 18 lap feature got off to a bank up start as Chad Sanders took the early
lead. But on lap 2 Mike Powell got upside down between turns 3 and 4 bringing
out the red flag. The rescue crew was very carefull getting him out of the car as
he was complaining of back pains. He was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
On the restart Sanders hung on to the lead, but Joe Feyen was on the move taking
2nd on lap 6 and overtaking Sanders on lap 9. Marty Steinbech made a late race
charge but had to settle for 2nd at the checkered flag. Sanders had his best finish of
the year in 3rd ahead of Tim Podraza and Nick Steier.

The B-Mod feature saw Floyd Richards take command at the drop of the
green flag and appeared to be the car to beat on this night. Bruck, making his
first appearance of the year at I-80, started 8th and found himself in 2nd by lap 3.
From there to the finish Richards did everything he could to hold off Bruck.
But Bruck got past him with one lap left and went on to record the win. Richards
Hung on to 2nd ahead of point leader Harry Nixon..

19 year old Trish Dover spent most of her day in a ballroom dancing competiton.
But when the green flag dropped in the 305 Sprint Car Feature, she did’nt dance
with the fellas, she ran off and hid from them. After starting on the outside front
row Dover shot out front and stayed there the entire 12 laps for her first career
feature win. After a rainout down the road Trish’s whole family was there to help
her celebrate.

The Crate Late Model 20 lap A-Feature saw Todd Morgan take the early lead
from Dave Livingston. On lap 13 Jason Hobscheidt put a slide job on Morgan
coming out of turn 4 and took the lead. The next time around officials threw the
yellow flag to set Hobscheidt back for aggressive driving. Morgan held on from
that point for his 1st win of the year. Hobscheidt finished 2nd ahead of Brad Soll,
Jody Krug and Brad Perdue. Point leader Billy Leighton Jr. finished 8th.

The Tobacco Free Nebraska Pro-Hornets had over 30 cars on hand so they
were split up into 2 A-Feature events. The first feature saw Darin Hoegren
lead lead until lap 6 when Corey Hutchison passed him and went on to record
his 1st career feature win.

Eagle Raceway Rained Out

The tail end of a heavy thunderstorm cell soaked Eagle after the heat races. They'll have double features on Saturday July 1.

Of course, if it weren't for bad luck, they'd have no luck at all. Around 5:45, while watering the top of the track the tank separated from the truck and fell onto the track. About 45 minutes later, a tractor and grater pulled the tank back to the infield.

Thompson notches fifth win at Red Cloud

By Mike Hughes

RED CLOUD, NE (June 23)—Superior’s Jon Thompson and the team of Adam Sidlo & E.J. Kothe of Hastings picked up the fifth win of the season in their respective divisions at The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, Friday evening, June 23.

Lonnie Veteto of Belleville, KS, led the first 2 laps of the IMCA Modified feature before the tenth starting Thompson dove into the lead. Two laps later, Red Cloud’s Lonnie Schriner moved to second and the chase was on. The top two cars pulled away from the rest of the field, even with 3 caution flags during the 20-lap race. Schriner stayed close but could not make a pass and had to settle for second. Jordan Grabouski finished third, followed by Brandon Blochlinger and Joby Hanson. Heat race winners were Thompson, Blochlinger, and Brian Calhoon.

The Cruiser feature had a couple of cautions, the last one coming on lap 9 of the 10-lap race. Ron & Kent Duffy of Guide Rock led the field back to green with 2 laps to go and were able to hold off heat two winners Sidlo & Kothe to the checkered flag. However, the Duffy’s did not pass post-race tech and Sidlo & Kothe were awarded the win, their fifth of the season at the 3/8-mile oval. Pat & Joe Hersh were second, followed by Jeremy Teselle & Dalton Remus. Josh & Vic Jacobitz won the other heat race.

Jason McCartney of Smith Center, KS, and Geoff Jermark of Beloit, KS, swapped the lead four times in the first four laps of the 18-lap IMCA Stock Car feature before Jermark took the lead on lap five and drove away from the field to score his first ever feature win in the caution free race. Josh Hudson finished a distant second, while McCartney won the battle for third over Cory Struckhoff and Troy Attwood. Jermark and Jared Remus were victorious in the two heat races.

Franklin’s Chase Carraher led all 14 laps of the IMCA Hobby Stock feature to earn his second win of the season. The lone caution in the race came on lap 7, but Carraher was able to pull away on the restart and was first to the checkers. Heat two winner Joe McDole placed second, trailed by Jared Lewis, heat one winner Jamie Reiman, and Mike Shriver.

Racing returns to The Speed Bowl Friday evening, June 30, as the regular four divisions return to action. The first green flag flies at 8:00 p.m.

NRP statement regarding June 18 Zeitner DQ

On Sunday June 18, Super Late Model driver Cory Zeitner was stripped of his A feature win after he was disqualified for having a modified iginition box equipped with a delay timer that would allow bypassing of the mandatory rev-limiter chip.

After debate, NRP staff released this statement and have made photos available (click here) of the illegal box and a stock MSD unit.

Here is the full statement from From NRP Gen. Manager Tom Gutowski via dirtdrivers.com:
"First, I-80 Speedway takes any disqualification very seriously, and so does NASCAR. We've also consulted with the Adams County Speedway on this matter.

Corey was DQ'd because his MSD 6A Ignition box failed our inspection process in regards to the rpm limiting chip.

Subsequent inspection of the confiscated MSD 6A box revealed that a delay timer had been installed in the chip circuit. Basically, you start the car and this timer gives you 4 minutes of run time with the chip inoperable.

This particular timer was adjustable and set for approximately 4 minutes. Other timers that we've researched come with a preset time and are much smaller in size.

Pictures of the modified box have been sent to our web master and they will be available asap. A legal 6A box is also pictured next to it for comparision. The pictures have also been emailed to MSD for their use and we'll make the box available to them for further inspection.

After further discussions with ACS and NASCAR, the following penaly is being imposed: $1000 fine and a 30 day suspension from all NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series events at I-80 Speedway.

Furthermore, the following amendent has been made to the I-80 Speedway and Adams County Speedway Super Late Model Rules:

Section 6, Item G:
'Any infraction of ignition system rules, including but not limited to RPM limiting or traction control devices, will result in a joint penalty phase enforced at ACS and NRP. First offense will be a $1000 fine and a 30 day suspension from NASCAR point races at both tracks. The second offense will be a $5000 fine and a 1 calendar year suspension from NASCAR point races at both tracks. Infractions within 30 days of the end of the season that incur a 30 day penalty will result in any remainder of the suspension period being carried over to the beginning NASCAR point races of the next season at both tracks.'

Previous rules in Section 6, Items G, H, and I will now become Items H, I, and J.

Further questions can be directed to myself at tgutowski@aol.com or Bill Baldwin at BBRE6X@cs.com. You can also reach me at 402-350-6120 or Bill at 402-291-1690.

Nicholson, Carlson, Krug, and Myers Pick Up Feature Wins at I-80 Speedway

By Joey Sparano

(GREENWOOD, NEB., 06/18/06) John Nicholson, Scott Carlson, Jody Krug, and Tom Myers all picked up "A" feature wins on Fathers Day at Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway.

The 25 lap Dodge Super Latemodel "A" feature event saw pole sitter Jeff Tilley jump out to an early lead on lap one. Tilley would loose the top spot on lap three when Corey Zeitner would make the move on the outside for the lead. On lap six the race would see its only stoppage when the #8x of Ron Tex Jr. came to a stop in turn three. After that it was all Zeitner who took the double checkered flags. In post race inspection Zeitner's #26JR was found to be illegal. That gave the win to John Nicholson. Bryant Goldsmith was second, followed by Jeff Tilley, Ed Kosiski, and Scott Koskovich. With Ed Kosiski finishing in the fourth position and points leader Joe Kosiski finishing 12th, Ed Kosiski becomes the points leader for the first time in the 2006 season.

The 18 lap Home Pride Modified race had outside front row starter Scott Carlson lead every lap and pick up his first win of the season. Mike Johnson, Mike Lineberry, Brian Foote and Jeff James rounded out the top five.

Just like the Modifieds, outside front row starter Jody Krug jumped to an early lead in the Grand National divisions "A" main. Lap five would be a tough lap as three different yellows would come out. The first was for a single car spin by Kathy Cook. The second was for a major pile up involving Joey Bauer, Joe Feyen, Kortney Kosiski, Scott Krause-Mahan, Trevor Millikan, Dave Hanke, and Ron Tilley. The third yellow was for an accident that sent Gary Leapley and points leader Dave Doll to the rear. When racing resumed it was Krug in the lead with Brian Scott close behind. Krug would keep the lead for the remaining of the race to take his second win of the season. Scott finished second, Brad Soll third, Dave Cook brought home fourth, and Dave Livingston finished fifth.

The Stereo West Auto Toys Hobby Stocks would have Tom Myers take the win in the 15 lap event. Jesse Sobbing, who tried a late race pass for the lead, finished second. Josh True, Chad Bassinger, and Justin Leech rounded out the top five. Tom & Tiff’s Family Restaurant of Glenwood, Iowa stepped up to add $100 to the winner's purse, but since Tom Myers won the race he added this weeks money to next week. So next week the Hobby Stock winner will get an extra $200.

Speed Secrets visits Eagle Raceway

Message Board - dirtdrivers.com: "Tune into SPEED SECRETS on FOX 4 & 17 this Sunday at 8:30 AM. You'll meet;
Eagle Promoter-Roger Hadan
Eagle Flagman-Larry White
World of Outlaws Announcer-John Gibson
Motor Builder-Jay Eckley
Some guy they call 'RaceTracker'. We had to physically drag Randy Lawrence in front of the cameras. That was kind of fun!
We visited with and taped so many drivers at the Jim Eckley Memorial race that it slips my mind which drivers you will see on the show this week! Guess you'll have to tune in and find out."

BCM, Speed Bowl rained out

Butler County and the Speed Bowl were rained out for Friday night.

The Pace Lap - Friday June 16, 2006

After all the craziness last weekend, things begin to settle down just a little as the dog days of summer begin to set in. Let's hope the forecasts don't pan out, but unfortunately, I'll have to take the bet that a 90% chance of rain tonight will wash someone out. Let's hope I'm wrong.

- Beatrice Speedway is starting their shows at 7:00 PM for the rest of the year starting this Saturday.

- If you need an example of why I don't like the two-lap rule, look at Saturday's WoO feature at Eagle. I understand its need for a traveling series, but a 48-minute A feature? Even with the wrecks, there was a long time spent in the pits, too.

- Several specials this week: Both Eagle Raceway and I-80 are offering Father's Day specials. Eagle's giving free admission to Dad's when they bring their children on Saturday, I-80 is extending the offer to dad's with a paid adult on Sunday.

- Eagle Raceway is advertising "The Gauntlet" next week. What is it? When I talked to Roger Hadan after the Outlaws on Friday night, he told me it involved the Short Bus with a rollbar, five hornets, paintball guns, and a Subway restaurant sign attached to the bottom of the bus. Oh man...

- Johnny Saathoff is the new IMCA National Point leader as of this week.

- Notice how quiet it was on the Dirtdrivers.com Eagle Raceway Message Board this week? Was it a tired bunch after 3 days of racing, did all go well, or did Hadan's threat of a $500 fine for starting trouble on the boards have something to do with it? I say it's a little from all three.

- I-80's gearing up for Clint Bowyer / Carl Edwards night in July. They've also announced a celebrity tournament of champions race with past I-80 champions.

- Friday's WoO show showed what the group is capable of. A furious A feature with a last lap pass gave Daryn Pittman his first win of the year, and set him up for a sweep of the weekend. A heavily-watered surface delayed the show an hour, but it was worth it and a good call. The track was very good and better than the cooler Saturday night's event.

- According to some WoO staff, Saturday's Eagle Raceway crowd was one of the biggest they've seen this season. Granted, it wasn't bad (sorry, but Friday's crowd was ummm...sparse), but if that's the biggest, the WoO need some help. I wonder how much value a $30 ticket is to that show? We'll see what happens when SLS Motorsports RENTS the track from Eagle and promotes the one-night September show.

- Talk about bad luck... On the worst possible night, a hot (temps around 100) and windy Friday June 10, the Butler County Motorplex water truck gave out. Go to the backup, right? Nope. The radiator hose crapped out on that one. Fortunately the Rising City and Surprise fire truck and KWJ custom spray applicator came to the rescue and helped salvage the night.

- In the media: The Dover family was featured in the Lincoln Journal-Star's Turn Three page this week. (See my photo of Davey Nall in the corner? LOL). Sprint car driver Ryan Roberts made a good showing on 104.1 The Blaze this morning.

- I-80 is looking to get the numbers up in the Hobby Stock class. Stereo West Auto Toys will pay the number/registration fee of any new Hobby Stock at NRP Sunday June 18.In conjunction, NRP will also help with the NASCAR licence fee. On top of that, Tom & Tiff’s Family Restaurant of Glenwood, Iowa is adding $100 to the winner's share of the purse.

- On Friday June 30, the ASCS Midwest sprint series will be at Junction Motor Speedway, and the next night, July 1 will see NCRA Late Models replace the CNCTA show. As always, supporting these shows helps bring them back.

- Speaking of CNCTA Late Models, Eagle's Roger Hadan said Friday's WoO support appearance was a "test" for possible future late model shows. Despite the showing of Butler County point leader Travis Dickes, only 12 late models showed, despite being paid more to win than their weekly offering at JMS. When asked to help pack the heavy track, most balked (except for Dan Jackson), and was told by officials there was complaining about lineups and whatnot. I'll give the benefit of the doubt that there were other shows in the area for the low car count. Davey Nall walked away with the feature. With that in mind, if this was a test, I'd grade it a C.

- As a reward for his helping out Roger Hadan gave Dan Jackson $50 to wash the car. So, what did he do? He pulled the car out and went to Eagle and WASHED IT! I've heard of of going to town to get parts, even another car (Mike Meyer did it and won the A feature a few years ago). But going out for a wash? That's STYLE!

- I've been told that there will be an interesting handicap on Saturday night in one of Eagle's classes. A few weeks ago, Mike Boston was offered $500 to start one row back in the Sprint A feature. This week? I'm told it involves the scale.

- Jason Danley was the top Nebraska driver Thursday night in the ASCS Midwest/N. Plains race at Park Jefferson Speedway last night finishing 7th in the A. Chad Humston came in 13th, Bobby Becker 16th, Jack Dover 17th. The series heads to Denison, IA Friday night.

Woods Bros. Realty's Gary Dominguez to offer Eagle Incentive

From Gary Dominguez - Woods Bros. Realty

On Saturday June 17th during intermission at Eagle Raceway, an area driver will be offered an incentive to win their feature with an undisclosed handicap. This incentive will be similar to the one offered Mike Boston in the #51 sprint a few weeks ago to win the feature from one row back further than his original starting position, and will again be offered by Roger Hadan of Eagle Raceway, and Gary Dominguez of Woods Bros. Realty.

Who is the lucky driver? What is the incentive? What class do they drive? Where will they be asked to start? The answer to who, what, where will be answered by the when! That's this Saturday during intermission at Eagle Raceway. See you Saturday!

Thursday and Friday Eagle photos posted

Here's some pics from Thursday June 8 and Friday June 9, 2006.

I'll have some Saturday shots soon.

I'm Tired

Long weekend with three races straight, and a lot of socializing afterward.

Here's another reason why I hate the 2-lap rule, or in the Outlaws' case, 3-laps - it pushes me to deadline. That A feature Saturday night took a long time. While the modified feature was running, I had to write the article for the Lincoln Journal. So, I listened to the FM broadcast of the Modified feature in the WoO Media Trailer and typed in the results about 1 minute to deadline. Mod fans: sorry about not getting any more details in the article.

BTW, the WoO Media Center is very cool. They've got a big HDTV monitor with the Outdoor Channel's feed (look for Haud's Saturday night flip - OUCH!), plus live scoring and wireless internet. It was very nice to work from and I have to thank the Outlaws' Chris Dolack for all his help this weekend. I had the pleasure of working with Chris when I did work for the Outlaws and he's a heck of a nice guy who takes his job very seriously and does it well.

I'll get some photos up soon from all three nights.

I-80: Leon Zeitner First Three-time Super Late Model Winner

By Joey Sparano

(GREENWOOD, NEB., 06/11/06) Leon Zeitner becomes the first three time winner at I-80 Speedway as he picked up the feature win in the Dodge Super Latemodels. Jerimiah Sillman, Dave Doll, and Jesse Sobbing all visited the I-80 Speedway Winners Circle as well, on night six of the 2006 season.

The 25 lap NASCAR Dodge Super Latemodel "A" feature saw Mike Wallace take the early lead from his outside front row starting spot. On lap three, fifth place starter "Lightning Leon" Zeitner would ride the hub of the track to the lead coming off of turn four. The first yellow of the race would fly on lap ten when second place Wallace would come to a stop in turn four. His night would be over with a mechanical failure. On the restart after a quick yellow for Ron Tex Jr, Bryant Goldsmith would drive his hot rod into the third position after starting the race 15th. Zeitner would keep the lead over Ed Kosiski and Goldsmith until lap 19 when the yellow would come out for points leader Joe Kosiski who had a flat right rear tire. When the green came back out, Zeitner kept the pedal to the metal and drove to his third win of the season. Ed Kosiski and Goldsmith were second and third. Rookie Jerry Warner was fourth, and Al Zeitner was fifth.

The Home Pride Modified Division would see an early race caution on lap one when the cars of Jeremy Leiting, Mark Leiting, Jonnie Wyman, and J.C. Wyman all collided in turn two. On the restart, Bill Bader Jr. would hold the lead until lap three when the #74 of Justin Clark would make the pass for the top spot. Clark, who started fourth row inside, would keep the point until lap eight when the #52s of Jerimiah Sillman slid past him on the outside. Sillman would keep the lead through four mid-race yellows, but during the last few laps he would receive heavy pressure from Brian Foote. On the final lap Sillman and Foote would race side by side, and coming to the line it was Sillman winning by a bumper. Foote, Clark, Nick Carlson, and Mike Lineberry rounded out the top five.

The Grand National Division would have the "Dirt Dawg" Dave Doll pick up his first feature win of the season. The #J1 of Harley Moen was second. Superman Joey Bauer Jr. was third. Mark Wyman was fourth and Dave Cook was fifth.

The Stereo West Auto Toys Hobby Stocks had a very scary accident on lap eight of the 15 lap event. The #66 of Bob Kracher would get upside down going into turn three. Mike Mass, Travis Alley, and Jerod Weston were also involved in the wreck. Mass would have to be transported by ambulance to a local hospital, but his status was not available at the time of this release. When racing resumed it was points leader Jeremy Swanson keeping the lead and taking the win. In the tech area after the race, Swanson's engine was claimed by another driver. Jeremy refused the claim causing him to be disqualified. That gave the win to Jesse Sobbing. Josh True was second, Jeremy Smith was third, Weston came back for fourth, and Rick Bradley rounded out the top five.

Nebraska Raceway Park is located off I-80 at exit 420 between Omaha and Lincoln and is home to I-80 Speedway, the Little Sunset Speedway go-kart track and Soaring Edge Motocross Park. The Speedway hosts events weekly from April through September. For race day track information call (402) 944-2233 or check out the official I-80 Speedway website at www.neracewaypark.com. The Omaha General Office can be contacted during normal business hours at 402-342-3453.

I-80: Livingston, Leighton Late Model Winners

By Jim Brennan

(Greenwood, Ne., 6/10/06) Saturday nights NASCAR , Dodge Weekly Racing Series
saw double features in the Crate Late Models with Dave Livingston winning the first
one and Bill Leighton Jr winning the 2nd one. Along the way Jason Cieslik, Harry
Nixon, Austin Kurtzer and Eric Fryman also won their respective features.

The night got started with the make up Dodge Crate Late Model feature from June 3rd.
Jason Hobscheidt and Trevor Millikan battled early on with Millikan in the lead
after 1 lap. Millikan and Hobscheidt hooked up with Livingston for a 3 wide
shootout before Hobscheidt grabbed the lead on lap 5. Livingston, running a low
groove near the inside guard rail, took the lead on lap 7. Livingston then survived
4 restarts to win his 2nd feature of the year with Hobscheidt finishing 2nd. Third
through 5th went to Mike Wallace, Bill Leighton Jr and Dave Doll.

The 2nd feature saw Jody Krug and Shawn Harker battle for the early lead
with Harker in front at the end of lap 1. Krug took the lead on lap 5 but Bill Leighton
Jr. was on the move. Leighton, the current track point leader and 5th in NASCAR
Division 4 points, moved up to take the lead on lap 12. But Krug battled with him
side by side for several laps before Leighton began pulling away. Dave Doll made
a late race charge but had to settle for 2nd ahead of Krug, Wallace and Harker.

The Certified Transmission Pro-am feature saw Chuck Dillon take the early lead
followed by Jason Cieslik. Shawn Bulin and Scotty Hartman made it a 4 car
battle for the lead. Cieslik took the lead on lap 10 and went on to record his
first win of the season. Hartman took 2nd over Bulin, Rick Negrete and Dillon.

Harry Nixon started on the outside front row of the B-Mod feature. Mike
Christiansen came on to challenge for the lead which he took on lap 8. Nixon
Retook the lead on lap 10. On the last lap going into turn 4 Christiansen tried a
Slide job to take the lead. But it failed and Nixon took the checkers for the
3rd time this year.

In the Tobacco Free Nebraska Pro-Hornet feature Austin Kurtzer took advantage
Corey Hutchison being set back 4 spots for jumping on the start, to record his 1st
win of the season. Perry Soule came on to finish 2nd and Hutchison fought back to
finish 3rd.

In the TFN Novice Hornet feature Eric Fryman took the car he borrowed from
Will McConnell and won his first feature of the year. Nate Christensen tried to
overtake him, but could’nt get the job done.

Next Saturday night will be Coca Cola night at the races. All fans will receive a
free Coca Cola product. Hot laps are at 6:30 and racing at 8. .

Final-Lap Pass Lifts Daryn Pittman To Eagle Nationals Prelim Victory

Eagle, NE Author: Chris Dolack, Dirt Motorsports VP Public Relations

So many times this season Daryn Pittman nearly raced to victory before something odd would happen late in the race, preventing him taking the checkered flag. On Friday night in the Eagle Nationals Preliminary Feature at Eagle Raceway, Pittman turned the table on Donny Schatz.

Pittman started on the pole and jumped out to a quick lead. Craig Dollansky ran him down on Lap 16 and swiped the lead with Schatz watching the action in third. On Lap 22, Schatz first busted past Pittman and then Dollansky to slide in front and pull away to what looked like a sure victory. But a caution for a spinning car in Turn 4 with three to go bunched the field with Schatz in front, Dollansky second and Pittman third.

Schatz jumped out quick on the restart, but Pittman jumped quicker. He got past Dollansky and locked onto Schatz. When Schatz slid up in Turn 2 with two laps to go, Pittman saw a potential opportunity. When Schatz did it again on the final lap, Pittman didn’t waste any time. He dove off the high-banked Turn 2 and shot down the backstretch to the lead and held on for the final two corners to drive the Titan Garages & Carports Maxim into the RacinSoles Victory Lane for the first time in 2006.

Schatz settled for second in the ParkerStore J&J with Dollansky third in the Karavan Trailers Maxim and Jeremy Campbell using a strong run in the Americas Best Value Inn Maxim to earn the final locked-in position to the dash that will set the top five rows for the main event on Saturday night.

Terry McCarl, whose left leg was broken May 20 at Sharon Speedway, returned to the track for the first time since the incident but watched as Sammy Swindell drove his Big Game Treestands Eagle to the fastest lap of the night in time trials. McCarl, who had surgery on his leg two weeks ago, tested his leg by time trialing a car owned by Mark Burch.

The Mean 15 drivers return Saturday to Eagle Raceway for the Eagle Nationals finale before competing again against the All Star Circuit of Champions on June 14 at The Raceway @ Powercom Park in Beaver Dam, Wis., and June 16-17 in the Duel in the Dakotas at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, N.D.

The Pace Lap - Friday June 9, 2006

Another busy weekend for racing.

- Last night's Jim Eckley Memorial Backrow Challenge was a great show. Lots of passing on a fast track. Mike Boston dominated the first A feature for 17 of the 20 laps, but a late race yellow flag set up a shootout with a fast-running Billy Alley, driving the Mark Burch #1m. Boston held off the Knoxville regular. The second A feature saw a battle between Josh Riggins and former Eagle regular, now World of Outlaws Rookie Justin Henderson, driving the Swenson #24. Henderson took the lead but fell out with mechanical problems just short of the halfway point of the 30-lap finale. Jack Dover challenged after the yellow flag, taking the lead for good on lap 26. Mike Boston charged from 12th to finish second. Third? Who was third...a freak accident sent cars crashing and Riggins sliding backwards through the infield. At the time, he was credited for third place.

- It was great to see the tribute to Jim Eckley, a long-time supporter of 360 Sprint Car racing in Nebraska in the form of the missing-man pace lap. It was also great to see Cori Eckley, Jim's daughter being given a provisional to start the 30-lap final after not qualifying through the second consi.

The sad part was seeing Cori having to pull in early and sitting in the infield for most of the race.

- Today's (Friday) forecast says sunny, hot, windy with a high of 97! I'm guessing Eagle Raceway will be _____ . Saturday however is supposed to be only in the 70's, which I think will change things dramatically.

- It was nice finally meeting Michele Jordan (sprint driver Jay Jordan's wife) and Lori Dover, (Jack's mom). Lori sent me a pic of a wee little Jack and his mini-sprint:
- Retired airline pilot, sprint car driver and all-around good guy Ed Bowes will be in the air over Junction Motor Speedway Saturday night in another great aerobatic display.

- I'll be hanging up the camera early Saturday night and bringing out the laptop as I'm covering the Eagle Nationals finale for the Lincoln Journal-Star. Journal-Star staffer and former Knoxville, IA resident Curt McKeever will cover Friday's show.

- This Saturday, Beatrice Speedway Hall of Fame will feature local legends of racing . The Big Car Association will be on hand to hot lap in their "classics." You can experience the "Beast" racing simulator in front of the grandstand throughout the night also. A BBQ Block Party and live music will follow the races.

- Speaking of the Beatrice Speedway Hall of Fame, a reminiscing thread on Dirtdrivers features a lot of distinguished alumni.

- Tight point races abound. At Red Cloud's Speed Bowl Tim Watts holds a narrow two point lead over Brandon Blochlinger in IMCA Modifieds, Matt Streit leads by just one over Brett Behrends in IMCA Stocks.

- NASCAR Nextel Cup stars Carl Edwards and Clint Bowyer will be racing against all of I-80 Speedway's Grand National drivers, including Carl’s brother Kenny Edwards, on July 30. Reserved seating is available. Click here for ticket information (PDF file)

- Last Saturday's Eagle Raceway bus races were a heck of a lot better than I thought they would be. The whole thing couldn't have gone better even if you wrote a script! Rolling a bus, one hitting the wall, and possibly the closest race of the night. Fans were still cheering when the race was replayed on the Jumbotron at Eagle Thursday night.

- Eagle Raceway's Roger Hadan had a lot to say at Thursday's pit meeting. One, the rule regarding the wait for cars in the work area won't be changed this season.

Second, he made no bones about being concerned about World of Outlaws car counts. In fact, he offered any driver who made an honest attempt to compete at either Friday or Saturday's show FREE pit admission for the year. If they ran both nights, they would get $200 on top of that.

Third, he took exception to the recent barrage of message board complaints and stated that anybody representing a team making a post meant to be critical of the track and arouse criticism from others would be fined once the posts reach a set limit. Like it or not, it's not unheard of, many sporting organizations levy fines for public outbursts critical of the organization or sport.

- It could be a busy week next week many Eagle Sprint regulars. Those running for ASCS Midwest region points will be found at Park Jefferson Speedway in Jefferson, SD on Thursday June 15, in Denison, IA at Crawford County Speedway Friday June 16, then back at Eagle for regular weekly action Saturday. Jeff Lowery, Rick Ideus, Doug Lovegrove, Seth Brahmer and Don Droud, Jr. are in the top 10 in ASCS Midwest standings.

That's it for this week. You may see me wandering around in a Heartland Racenews.com T-shirt this week. If you do, say "Hi."

Photos

I've really appreciated all the great comments on my photos on the message boards, in person and via e-mail. I've been photographing as a hobby since I was about 10, working mostly landscapes, shot a few sports in high school, shoot for a stock sports agency out of Atlanta and commercial work (product shots and such) but this is the first year I get to shoot racing on a regular basis.

The goal of it all was just to stretch my creative legs and complement the media portion of this site. Other tracks have been kind to offer me media passes, including Eagle Raceway due to my past history with the track, the World of Outlaws and other work I've done.

And most people have respected that © at the bottom and asked for prints or permission to use the pictures, and I've respected track photographers by getting permission to redistribute the print. My commercial work and time as a member of SportsShooter.com, a professional resource site, has taught me to register my photos with the U.S. Copyright Office.

However, someone printed the samples (web samples do not print well), and made home-made autograph "cards" (the one I saw was on cheap paper, looked like it was done by a fourth-grader, and left my hand with ink on it). It wasn't a print of a sample card, it was one that had an autograph on it.

I hadn't had problems with people copying the picture and posting it onto their sites, because they asked, left the copyright notice intact and they respected my bandwidth and hosted the pic themselves. I knew by posting on the internet people would copy the pic and use it on their personal desktop, and whatnot. That didn't bother me, either. I'm not naive.

Nor was there a problem with people posting links to my picture site. I was even honored... Some were even kind enough to ask permission to just to use the image in a mockup of autograph cards. Again, no problem.

The problem came with the reprinting and redistrubution of the picture as a promtional vehicle for them and their sponsors. It's like using an actor in a commercial and not paying them. What I do is not a money-making venture - it costs me money. It's a reflection of my interest in racing, photography, and documenting history. I try to do this while offering services to the tracks by promoting their program to a target audience - and the promoters I've talked to feel that I do. Win-win. If they don't think so fine. I'm not entitled to anything.

Unfortunately, I have to do what I didn't want to do - watermark the samples across the image, and limit the number of pictures. If you're interested in something you don't see, email me.

I'll have some shots from this weekend up and I hope you enjoy them.

Blogger Problems = My Problems

Blogger, the Google tool that I use to publish to this site is having issues now. Consequently, that may make my page slow to load.

I've turned off my Ad Sense ads to see if that will help a little, but this should be taken care of in a few days (at least that's what THEY say). Having been in the software business, "a few days" is like the term "just a second," it's usually much longer. Thanks for your patience.

Editorial: Two Cents on Two Laps

A debate raged this week over a new rule at Eagle Raceway which does not give drivers who pull into the pits during a yellow flag a set time for making repairs before the race goes green. Since 1998, Eagle instituted a rule that said once a car goes to the pits, or work area under a yellow flag they would have two laps after the lineup is set to come back out. This winter that two-lap cushion was eliminated.

Good riddance.

WHAT?!?! Well, for starters when I worked on a car from about 1985 – 1996, not once did we get the benefit of having a set time in a work area to make repairs. To quote a Knoxville Pit Steward: “We’re going now and I don’t care if you aren’t ready.” So, I’ll hide behind tradition and say that they didn’t do it back when, so too bad.

Now, anyone who knows me knows I’m not one for arguments based on tradition for tradition’s sake or the excuse “that’s the way we’ve always done it.” To me, it’s the equivalent of a 4 year old saying “because” when they explain why they took a cookie away from their sibling. So, I’ll offer you some logical reasons as to why I think this and a solution at the end…

In order (most important first).

1. Safety. By far most important. The pits are a dangerous area. They’re dimly lit, packed with cars staged for the next race, and people are either looking at the track or looking back at their car. Many in the pits are fans or people not experienced with the chaos of the pits. Some crews pack up for the night and leave. No matter how much time you give be it two laps or two minutes, every driver hustles to get to work as soon as possible. It’s human nature. Mix adrenalin with tear-offs, dirt and dust, and people wandering around, and you have a recipe for trouble, especially when you have people racing from their PIT to the track entrance, not just to the work area. In addition, I’m not a fan of slowing on the track to bring out a yellow flag. It's a hazard - that's why they throw the flag in the first place.

2. Fairness. Even though officials try to adhere to the two lap rule, there’s an element of luck involved. How much time does it take to line the cars up? Is someone playing games to buy a friend some time? How long did it take the tow truck to get them to the pits? When is the lineup “set?” I can remember every year getting at least 5-10 emails during the season saying “WHY DID YOU LET (___Insert name of driver ____) GET (___number of laps___) WHEN THE RULE IS TWO LAPS!!!!! I HAVE IT ON VIDEO!!!! QUIT PLAYING FAVORITES TO (Omaha/Lincoln/Beatrice) DRIVERS!!!!!!! Ok, not all of them were that way, but the perception (if not reality) was there. Officials make mistakes.

Remember how this “work area” rule for sprint cars came with the World of Outlaws. Ted Johnson wanted his guys to be able to make more money and not have their night end early. So, he gave them this rule and flew it under the guise of fans wanting to see their favorites. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt but that was secondary. And it wasn’t fairly administered. If your name was Kinser or Swindell, you got more time than if your name was “Wojohowitz.” And that’s not urban legend, it’s fact. I remember hearing officials talk about it when Craig Cormack was the World of Outlaws VP of Race Operations.

And one more thing. Intentional yellows affect the outcome of the race for everyone. It disrupts the flow. One of the great things about short track racing as compared to others is that while many NASCAR/IRL/F1 races are decided in the pits, short track races are decided ON THE TRACK. Adding "pit stops" takes away one of the best things about the sport.

3. Time. The only things a promoter can control time-wise are: the start of the race, the scheduled gap between races, and intermission. All the rest – pushing off, lining up, cleaning up wrecks, yellow flags, and so on is mostly out of their control. The only way a promoter can get any of that back is by NOT adding extra downtime, and keeping things moving as long as it’s safe and feasible to do so. Simple math will tell you that the actual races take up a small portion of the whole program. A 25-lap sprint A feature is about 7 minutes total green flag time.

Let me put this in context: when I did music for the track, the sprint A feature intro from “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble” > “Saturday Night” > “Gimme Some Lovin’” > “Zombie Nation” > “Machinehead” was NINE minutes long, and that’s with the songs CUT. I’m not bagging on sprints, but I wanted to give reference.

Race promoter meetings each year harp on program length. Movies, concerts (unless you saw the Grateful Dead), races on TV, football games, etc. all have one thing in common: they’re all around 3 hours. Markerters, entertainers, and so on know that’s a magic number. I’m sure there’s plenty of fans who would like to sit through races all night (though I’ve had nightmares like that). But, most casual fans and even a lot of die-hards have said they don’t want to be there all night. They’ve told me this in person.

When you get to A feature time, patience runs thin, even if it’s just a few minutes. Chalk it up to being tired, intensity of the event, whatever. I know this for a fact. I can remember sitting in the announcer’s booth hearing the most intense fan yelling for things to get going as a car sat in the work area.

4. Futility. I’m sure we all remember a “worst-to-first” drive from someone who restarted out of the work area. Know why you remember? Because it’s rare. Most of the time, the car ends up lapped shortly after the green flag, or they end up causing another yellow because the car is still broke or the part doesn’t match the intended set up. Again, it’s against human nature to take that away, I understand. But sometimes luck isn’t with you.

So what’s my solution? End yellow flag pit stops altogether.

Again, WHAT?!? Am I crazy? Don’t I know what these people have in their cars? Yes I do. And I already mentioned I’ve been part of teams on the short end of the stick. But I think the reasons above present a logical reason as to why I’m glad the two lap rule was removed and think it could go further.

For the emotional end of the argument, I’ll offer this: those who say pit stops are part of the drama and necessary, OK. But it is different than other forms of racing. Unlike short track racing, NASCAR is a continuous race. Unless there’s a red flag it’s running for three hours, and if you sit in the pits you go down laps, even under yellow. IRL & CART are the same way. In Formula One, where people have tens of millions in each car, if you STOP anywhere but in your pits you’re DONE. No tow to the pits to restart. Done. And, all these pits are “hot pits” and restricted to race teams only. Even then crews wear safety gear and there are injuries on pit lane each season. So, by eliminating pit stops altogether, the danger is reduced, it’s a rule applied equally and can’t be messed with, it speeds up the show, and potentially saves equipment.

Maybe now the horse has been let out of the barn, people are used to and expect work time. But I've become too used to anything that takes away from action on the track has to be eliminated.

That was about a roll of quarters more than two cents, but thanks for reading.

Joe Kosiski Takes I-80 Speedway Super Latemodel Win

By Joey Sparano

(GREENWOOD, NEB., 06/04/06) NASCAR Division II front runner Joe Kosiski would come from the 12th starting spot to win the Dodge Super Latemodel "A" feature at I-80 Speedway. Mike Lineberry, Brian Scott, and Jeremy Swanson also picked up feature victories on USG night.

The 25 lap Dodge Super Latemodel "A" feature saw Billy Leighton Jr. jump to an early lead on lap one. Leighton would battle with pole sitter Clint Benson until lap six when Benson would sneak by on the outside for the lead. Three laps later Benson would loose the top spot to a charging Mike Wallace who started eighth. That same lap the race would see its first caution period as the #1m of Todd Bell would the handle of his car in turn four. Wallace would keep the lead until the lap 14 restart, that's when 12th place starter Joe Kosiski grabbed the lead coming off of turn two. Kosiski would have a 15 car length lead on lap 22, but it all diminished when the yellow flew for Keith Mander Jr. who had spun in turn three. On the restart Kosiski would have his hands full of second place runner John Nicholson who had steadily moved his way through the field. Nicholson would get along side of Kosiski, but he could not make the pass. Joe Kosiski would go on to take the win, his second of the season. Nicholson would come home second, followed by Scott Koskovich, Corey Zeitner, and Al Zeitner.

The Home Pride Modifieds had second row inside starter Mike Lineberry grab the lead on lap one. After a lap one spin by Justin Clark, the restart would see race leader Lineberry stay out front with Matt Richards and Brian Foote battling for second. Foote would get by Richards on lap four, and he then would charge after Lineberry for the lead. Lineberry and Foote would race side by side for the lead with Richards following close behind. Meanwhile Nick Carlson and Mike Meyer were racing door to door for fourth. The great racing would come to a slow on lap 14 when the #69x of Bill Bader Jr. spun. On the restart Lineberry would keep the lead and sail to his first win of the season. Foote would get second. Mike Meyer came home third, Nick Carlson fourth, and Matt Richards finished fifth.

The Grand National Division saw Brian Scott take the early lead over pole sitter Andrew Kosiski. Scott and Kosiski would run one two until lap seven when Jacob Brown and Trevor Millikan tangled on the front straightaway. After that, a host of yellows would come out for single car accidents. Scott would maintain the lead, but Kosiski would slip back on each restart. Meanwhile Dave Doll and Ron Tilley battled for the second position as Scott lead. The 20 lap feature would come to an end with Scott taking the win. Doll would edge out Tilley at the line for second. Points leader Dave Livingston would take fourth, while Jody Krug finished fifth.

It was spills and thrills night in the Stereo West AutoToys Hobby Stocks. The race would see both Rick Munson and Jeremy Auten flip their cars, while second place points runner Tom Myers made heavy contact with the turn four wall. All drivers were unhurt. When the marathon race finished, it was Jeremy Swanson taking the win with a last lap pass over Jesse Sobbing. SpongeBob Kracher, Chad Bassinger, and Josh True rounded out the top five.

Nebraska Raceway Park is located off I-80 at exit 420 between Omaha and Lincoln and is home to I-80 Speedway, the Little Sunset Speedway go-kart track and Soaring Edge Motocross Park. (Greenwood, Ne., 6/02/06) – Saturday nights NASCAR, Dodge Weekly Racing Series
went off without a hitch until feature time. And the delays were not due to racing
accidents. A woman in the grandstand needed medical attention and had
to be attended to by the ambulance crew and a trip to the hospital. Later just before the
Crate Late Model feature a person in the pits had an asthma attack calling the ambulance
into service again. It was looking like a 30 minute wait for another ambulance, so the
program was ended and double Late Model features will be run next week.

Before all this there was some exciting racing action starting with the Certified Transmission Pro-am 18 lap feature. Chuck Dillon, Terry Cleveland and Shawn
Bulin battled for the early lead with Bulin taking control as lap 1 was completed.
Tim Podraza and Larry Robinson Jr. came to the front with Podraza taking the lead
on lap 8 followed by Robinson. Robinson took the lead on lap 10 when Podraza’s motor
let go. Robinson went on to score his 2nd win of the year with Bulin in 2nd and
Rick Negrete in 3rd.. Chad Sanders who finished 4th was disqualified for weighing
Light after the feature.

The Tobacco Free Nebraska Pro-Hornet feature saw Perry “The Soulman” Soule
advance to the A after winning the B-Feature. Soule then took advantage of a
couple of yellow flags and charged to victory in the 12 lap feature. On the last restart
with 2 laps left Soule was in 2nd. He took the lead with one lap left and went on to
record his 3rd win of the year over Corey Hutchison and Austin Kurtzer.

The TFN Novice Hornets saw Nate Christensen dominate as he took his 4th win of
the year over Taylor Collins, Eric Fryman and Nate Brown.

“Rocket Rick” Germar made his first appearance of the season and stole the show.
He started in the 6th position and took his time moving up to 2nd position on lap 5.
On lap 9 early leader Harry Nixon spunout and Germar took the lead which he held
til the end. Floyd Richards finished 2nd ahead of Larry Robinson Sr. and Ben Romey.

The Outlaw Vintage Lites Racing Series was also on the card. Veteran driver Scott Naggatz started on the outside front row and was challenged early by Travis Long.
But Long went out with mechanical problems and Naggatz was never seriously
challenged the rest of the way picking up the win over Chick DeMoss.

LJS: Roberts scores victory at Eagle Raceway

By Todd Henrichs / Lincoln Journal Star

"EAGLE — On a night where they turned school buses loose on Eagle Raceway, rookie Ryan Roberts proved he has learned a thing or two himself over the last few weeks.

Roberts, who threatened to pick up his first feature win the last two Saturdays only to be involved in incidents, roared from third place over the last four laps to score this week’s long-awaited win in Eagle’s 360 sprints.

“I didn’t think I had enough time left,” said Roberts, who took his first lead of the race charging to the white flag." Click for Full Article on JournalStar.com:

Thompson, Sidlo & Kothe double up at Red Cloud

By Mike Hughes

RED CLOUD, NE (June 2)—Race fans got their money’s worth at The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, as they were treated to double features Friday night, June 2, because of the weather shortened program the previous week. Jon Thompson of Superior and the team of Adam Sidlo & E.J. Kothe of Hastings were able to win both features in their respective divisions during the evening.

Thompson was able to hold off a pair of Beloit, KS, drivers in Tim Watts and Brian Calhoon in the IMCA Modified makeup feature. Brandon Blochlinger and Greg Metz rounded out the top five.

Thompson also picked up a win in the nightcap to score his fourth win of the season at the 3/8-mile oval. He was followed by Metz, Blochlinger, Jordan Grabouski, and Watts.

Campbell’s Troy Attwood picked up the victory in the makeup IMCA Stock Car feature. Jake Bradley was second, followed by Matt Streit, Jared Remus and Jason Smidt.

In the regular feature, which went 20-laps caution free, Josh Hudson of Kensington, KS, was first to the checkers, claiming his fourth win of the year at Red Cloud. Smidt, Cory Struckhoff, Remus and Attwood trailed Hudson to the checkers.

Chase Carraher of Franklin picked up his first win of the season in the IMCA Hobby Stock makeup feature. Mike Shriver was second, followed by Jim Buss, Jeromy Wagner and Wade Wagenblast.

In the regular feature, Jim Buss of Hastings found his way to the winner’s circle for the third time this season at the Speed Bowl. Wagenblast placed second, followed by Delbert Selvage, Shriver and Wagoner.

Sidlo & Kothe scored their two wins in the Cruiser division. They fended off Joe & Jacob Krone and Ron & Kent Duffy in the makeup feature, then beat the Duffy’s and Josh & Vic Jacobitz to the flagstand in the regular feature to notch their fourth win of the season.

Next Friday, June 9, the Dwarf Cars and Mod Lites will join the regular four divisions in racing action, starting at 8:00 p.m.

Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame to Induct Six New Members

By Randy Lawrence, Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame Media Director

LINCOLN, Neb. (June 2, 2006) - The Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame is pleased to announce its six inductees for 2006. The members of the class of 2006 include: Clyde Baker, Ord; Jack Beck, Omaha; Gene Kidder, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky; Charlie Martin, Lincoln; Abe Slusky, Omaha; and Kent Tucker, Aurora. The induction ceremony will take place at the Fireman’s Hall in Lincoln, Neb., on October 13.

Clyde Baker was the race superintendent for the Valley County Fair from 1928-1942 and was instrumental in making the Ord, Neb., track a venue where many of the sports greatest drivers raced. The track he helped create was a challenging high-banked half-mile with long chutes resulting in high speeds. Baker’s forte’ was his rapport with the racing community. He always treated the racers fairly and honestly, creating an atmosphere where the sport’s best wanted to race. It was through his tireless effort that men such as Johnny Gerber, Lloyd Axel, Joie Chitwood, Gus Schrader and Bobby Grim in the Big Cars (now known as Sprint Cars), plus Harry McQuinn, Lloyd Ruby, Jud Larson and Bobby Parker in the Midgets began their careers. Many more traveled our country’s roads to race at Ord. Baker always made the racers feel welcome in the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s.

Jack Beck was born in Loup City, Neb., and grew up near Litchfield. Beck started his racing career in 1970 and his personal driving accomplishments include twenty Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Midwest Division national points championships -- three with the Neokla Region and the last seventeen with the Nebraska Region. In addition, Beck finished on the podium five times at the SCCA National Run Offs. Beck also received numerous other awards from various levels of the SCCA, including being selected six times as the Nebraska Region National Competition Driver of the Year. In addition to his driving skills, Beck is a nationally-known engine builder and founded Orion Motor Sports in 1986. Located in northwest Omaha, Orion maintains, fabricates, restores, does engine development and provides restoration for cars that compete in vintage, SCCA and IMSA events. His engine development laurels includes various models of Alfa, Nissan, BMC and Ford Cosworth Engines.

Gene Kidder, a native of Omaha, Neb., now a resident of Mammoth Cave, Ky., began drag racing in Omaha in 1952. As a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Advisor in Division 5, he was instrumental in getting racers off the streets and onto a track at the old Flightland Airstrip in Omaha. He raced Mopars for years and set a National Record in 1966 at Denver, Colo. In 1968, Kidder left Omaha with his nitro-burning Funny Car, and in 1972 rolled the car seven times at 140 mph during a run at Miami (Fla.) Dragway. That experience encouraged him to return to his banking career, and he became president of Central Bank in West Palm Beach, Fla. In 1980, he returned to the business side of racing, working for aftermarket automotive firms such as Moroso Performance, Firepower Ignition and Holley Carburetor. Kidder is currently employed as a Certified Track Technician in Division 3 of the NHRA at the Beech Bend Park & Raceway in Bowling Green, Ky. At 73 years of age he is still active in the sport and loving it.

Charlie Martin was born in Seneca, Kan., in 1930 and moved to Lincoln where he went to work for Bob Carroll Farm Machinery in 1949. Martin started attending races in 1950 at Grandview Theatre Speedway in Omaha on Sunday afternoons and at Capital Beach in Lincoln. During the late 1950s through the early ‘60s he built and wrenched on race cars for Louie Quattrocchi. In 1965 Martin hooked up with Joe Saldana and they raced a Super Modified at Midwest Speedway in Lincoln and Eagle (Neb.) Raceway. From 1967-69, Martin was crew chief on Saldana’s “Mechanical Rabbit” roadster built by Don Brown, finishing second in Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway points all three years. Martin and Saldana traveled throughout Midwest racing the roadster with great success. In 1971, Martin was crew chief for Lloyd Beckman in Bill Smith’s famous No. 4x compiling 19 feature wins. In 1972, Martin wrenched for R.D. “Biz” Bisping of Norfolk with Gerald Bruggeman at the wheel. From 1973-75, several drivers drove for Bisping and Martin, including Don Maxwell, Beckman and Russ Brahmer. Martin was an unassuming man with a passion for building, preparing and maintaining race cars throughout his racing career.

Abe Slusky found the land just across the river from downtown Omaha in 1947 which became known as Playland Park. He built a large wooden roller coaster, many other rides and converted the closed dog track into a track for auto racing. Playland Speedway was thus born in 1948, featuring midget auto racing. Midget racing turned into stock cars in the ‘50s and Playland Speedway was the hotbed of racing in the Midwest. Among the drivers that raced at Playland Speedway were Tiny Lund, Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame inductees Bud and Bob Burdick along with Bob Kosiski. Slusky spent 22 years stamping his style of leadership on the local, regional and national racing scene. Slusky died from a heart condition in 1970, but over the next six years Playland Speedway enjoyed huge success until 1977 when it finally closed.

Kent Tucker was eastern and central Nebraska's dominant driver throughout much of the 1970s. The popular farmer from Aurora scored back-to-back Late Model Nationals wins in 1974 and 1975 after a near-miss runner-up finish in the inaugural event in 1973 at the Mid-Nebraska Speedway (then called Mid-Continent Raceways). In addition to numerous track championships at several of Nebraska’s dirt ovals and hundreds of feature wins throughout the Cornhusker State, Tucker was also a threat on any dirt track in any state he visited. When his familiar blue No. 57 pulled through the gate, all bets were off. Among his national driving accomplishments, he claimed the Alta Race Days championship in 1974. Battling some of the best dirt track pilots throughout the Midwest, Tucker claimed the I.M.C.A. Late Model National Championship in 1977.

The purpose of the Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame is to perpetuate the memory of these individuals who have brought lasting fame to the state of Nebraska through their efforts in auto racing.

Nominees to the Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame must have been a resident of the state for at least two years and must be retired from the discipline they are being honored for four years. Active participants in the sport will be considered if they are 55 years of age and have been with the sport for at least 30 years.

All candidates must have made positive contributions to the sport of auto racing on a local, regional and national level.

Anyone wishing to nominate a person to the Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame can do so by submitting the person's name, with a list of their accomplishments to: The Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame, Inc., 5527 S. 20th St., Lincoln, NE 68512. Or you can call 402-421-2266, or e-mail your nomination to joeorthphoto@aol.com.

The Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame website is currently under construction and will be online soon at www.narhof.com.

The Pace Lap - Friday June 2, 2006

Welcome to this week's edition of The Pace Lap. Here's some tidbits, commentary and news from last week.

-It's Novelty Race Weekend - Bicycle races at Beatrice and Butler County this weekend, with the buses being brought out at Eagle. Yes, the "short bus" jokes have flowed like water from the bottom of Eagle's turn one.

-The I-80 Speedway Alphabet Soup Late Model Race is really turning out to be something special, with 79(!) SUPER Late Models running. Steve Kosiski showed why he's part of the NASCAR NDWS all-time 25 by winning the event over Kelly Boen. Despite some annual races at area tracks fading in participation and interest, this race is becoming a staple on the Nebraska Racing calendar.

-The Jumbotron looked good Saturday at Eagle. "Speedy" and crew did a great job getting it up and running. Speedy told me afterward that they were told by the sign company that it would take two weeks to set up. They did it in a matter of days. About the only complaint I heard was the numbers for the scoreboard were a little small, and they told me that they're going to fix that. Otherwise, it looked good for a "trial run." But my favorite part was watching them play Pole Position and Ms.(?) Pac Man afterward. If you got Tempest up there, I'll see you in the press box Saturday. Speaking of Speedy, he'll be filling in for Roger Hadan as race director Saturday June 3.

-If you want a lot of racing, Red Cloud's Speed Bowl is the place to be Friday. Rain shortened the program prior to the Cruiser heats. They're running the Cruiser heats along with the feature races for all 4 divisions, followed by the evening's regular race program. Race time is 8:00 p.m. Bring your seat cushion!

-I'm thinking about doing some bumper-sticker sized Heartland RaceNews.com decals. Nick Bryan gave me a heck of an idea and that is selling them. I'm thinking just for a couple bucks ($2-3), enough to cover some production costs. They would be an adaptation of the logo at the top of the page - simple and readable, suitable for your car, covering dents, bandaging wounds, whatever. If you're interested, let me know by email. If I get enough interest, I'll do a run of them.

-The best race on TV this weekend was the Indy 500 - by far, and I can never get tired of watching the speed shots through the tunnel at Monaco during an F1 race. Even the slowest car looks awesome.

-I'm looking for Hornet/Tuner/Sport Compact drivers who haven't yet taken to the streets or who've recently acquired their driver's licences for a possible story. Email me if you're interested in an interview.

-Eagle Sprint Driver Mike Boston took a $500 offer from Gary Dominguez and Eagle Raceway promoter Roger Hadan to win the A feature, if he started one row back. However, Boston offered a lucky fan the opportunity to win the money. The four-peat didn't happen though, as Boston finished 9th. However, he did take the point lead from Jeff Griffis.

-There's a point battle going on in the Pro Hornet division at I-80 Speedway with Rick Havenridge and Austin Kurtzer tied for the lead with 202 points.

-Only TWO points separate the top four in the Stoney Burk Memorial Stock Car divison at JMS. Bryan Boersen of Grand Island, NE holds the lead with 153 points, followed by Andy Wilkinson and Jason Wilkinson, tied at 152 with Jason Van Winkle in fourth with 151. A point race like that would wake up even Rip Van Winkle.

-While Johnny Saathoff is putting a lot of distance between himself and Chris Alcorn for Butler County Motorplex IMCA Modified points (31), the gap between second and eigth place is just 11 points. Travis Dickes leads Late Model standings, with Michael Nichols atop the Stock Car points, Rich Small leading Hobby Stocks and Chuck Wergin the Hornets.

-It's three nights of sprint car action at Eagle next week, with the Jim Eckley Memorial Backrow Challenge for 360s leading off on Thursday June 8, then the World of Outlaws Eagle Nationals taking place Friday and Saturday. For the first time in several years, the 360 sprints will not run support. Instead Late Models run Friday with Modifieds on Saturday night. Car counts for the Outlaws have been respectable, but their tour is highly focused on hotbeds of Sprint car racing (IN, OH, PA). Don't be surprised to see some 360s fill in the ranks with the chance of getting into A feature money. Last year, Gene Ackland qualified for Saturday's A feature and pocketed $800. Mike Chadd, who's been running select NST races will be out both nights with a 410 motor under the hood. He's run well in NST races this year, so it will be fun to watch him on a familiar track.

-The Outlaw Vintage Lites dwarf cars take to I-80 for the first time Saturday night.

-The National Sprint Tour - rival series to the World of Outlaws Sprints announced a $2,400,000 point fund over this and the next two years. Where the funding is coming from, I'm not sure, but either way this seems to guarantee a split in the top ranks of sprint car racing for several years to come. I don't know if this is a good thing.

- I'm sure someone's going to take this the wrong way, but oh well... I went to the POWRi Midget / ASCS Sprint race at Junction Motor Speedway last Friday. I was surprised to see a promoter take on two "premier" classes for one night. You're looking at well over $20K in purse, plus sanction fees. Kudos. It was a quality field, though the midget count was a little thin, it was great to see a Nebraska team take the checkers. The Sprint field was top notch.

However, I was disappointed in how the track turned out. It took rubber in the sprint B feature and left racing as nose-to-tail along the bottom for most of the show, and bald tires on the sprint cars afterward. As most sprint car fans know, dry slick is one thing (I actually like the races a little dry), but taking rubber is another and usually a safety issue - in this case, Chad Humston's blown left rear and subsequent flip. Again, as I said in my post on Dirtdrivers.com (see JDO Media, about 15 posts down), I won't fault JMS, it can be hit or miss and I'll call it a miss and certainly not negligent. But I think the people who are defending the conditions by telling others to hit the road if they don't like it are missing the point and setting the wrong example.
